Is your child ready for READ-3? PARENT ACADEMIC SUPPORT SESSION BY KARYNN KATZ, PARENT INVOLVEMENT EDUCATOR FEBRUARY 19, 2015 * 12PM & 6PM COLD SPRING SCHOOL

Importance of Basic Reading Skills o Reading and Comprehension are the foundations for all academic learning. o In grades kindergarten through third, students are primarily learning to read. By the fourth grade, all students should be reading to learn. o Students who cannot read proficiently by grade 4 will struggle to attain reading skills while trying to master advanced content. 2

What is IREAD-3? o IREAD-3 is a standardized assessment that is administered to students enrolled in grade 3. o Achieving proficiency on IREAD-3 fulfills the requirements of Public Law 109, designed to ensure that students can read before the fourth grade. o Every accredited school in the State of Indiana is required to administer the IREAD-3. 3

When is IREAD-3? o IREAD-3 is administered following the ISTEP+ Applied Skills Assessment and before the Multiple Choice Session of ISTEP+. o We will administer the practice test on March o IREAD-3 will be March

What does IREAD-3 assess? o Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 specifically measures foundational reading standards through grade 3. 5

What does IREAD-3 assess? (Blueprint) 2.Comprehension and Analysis of Nonfiction and Information Text  Questions may include comparing and responding to grade-level informational text by making connections and/or predictions while reading, and identifying important information within text (e.g., problem and solution, cause and effect, main idea.  30-40% of the test 7

What does IREAD-3 assess? (Blueprint) 3.Comprehension and Analysis of Literary Text  Questions may include comparing and responding to grade-level literary text by recalling and/or describing story elements (e.g., plot, character traits and development, problem and solution), and identifying theme and narrator of different literary genres.  30-40% of the test 8

Sample IREAD-3 Items – Word Analysis  The following IREAD-3 sample items illustrate the type of WORD ANALYSIS items that assess scholars’ analyses of beginning, middle, and ending sounds.  A sample item precedes each set of items.  The teacher reads aloud to students the directions for the sample item only.  Once scholars have answered the sample item and asked any questions, the scholars must answer all questions in this section on their own. 12

Common Questions about IREAD- 3 Which students are required to take the IREAD-3 assessment? All students who take ISTEP+, including those who have been in the country less than one year. When will IREAD-3 results be received? IREAD-3 results are expected back to our school by the first week of April. What happens if my child does not pass IREAD-3? They will be provided with an opportunity for additional remediation and an additional online IREAD-3 testing opportunity during the summer. Will only IREAD-3 results count in determining promotion to grade 4 or will ISTEP+ count as well? Only IREAD-3 is used to determine retention/promotion decisions for regular education students. Special Education students may qualify for a waiver if decided by a case conference committee. 18

Common Questions about IREAD- 3 What are “Good Cause Exemptions?” Students may be determined to be eligible for promotion to 4 th grade only if they are Special Education scholars or have already been retained two times in the school career. Which students must participate in the summer retest session?
