December 1941 Japan took control of Asia; they overran Malaya, Burma, Thailand, Guam, Wake, the Solomon, and Dutch East Indies. In December 1941 Japanese forces landed in Philippine Islands US & Filipino forces held out until May In March 1942, Gen. Douglas MacArthur left the Philippines stating “I shall return”

Bataan Death March~ April 1942 Following the American surrender, Japanese soldiers marched US troops to their prison camp, 80 miles away. Beheading, throat-cutting, and shooting were common causes of death, in addition to death by bayonet, disembowelment, rifle-butt beating, and deliberate starvation or dehydration on the week-long continual march in the tropical heat. Of the 72,000 prisoners who began the march, only 54,000 survived the march. The terms of the Geneva Convention were ignored by the Japanese who made up rules and inflicted punishments at the whim of the Camp Commandant.

April 1942 Doolittle’s Raid, a daring series of bombing raids on major Japanese cities, like Tokyo Purpose- dampen Japanese spirits & increase American Patriotism! Battle of the Coral Sea, US forces stopped the Japanese invasion attempted of Australia All air fight! For the first time, Japanese had be pushed back.

Battle of Midway~June 1942 –US had broken the Japanese naval code and knew where the Japanese would attack Midway –Japan was COMPLETELY surprised! –Americans used torpedo planes and dive bombers to attack; Japanese lost 4 aircraft carriers, a cruiser and 250 planes- America had “avenged Pearl Harbor!” –Battle was a turning point in Pacific, US started a campaign of island hopping across the Pacific toward Japan. Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander of American naval forces in Pacific

Code Talkers During World War II bilingual Navajo speakers were specially recruited by the Marines to serve in their standard communications units in the Pacific Theater. Navajos could encode, transmit, and decode a three-line English message in 20 seconds, versus the 30 minutes required by machines at that time. Because fewer than 30 non Navajo’s spoke the language, it was perfect for open radio communication under combat situations. Even if the Japanese intercepted the signals, they would not understand them.

War in China In December 1937 Japanese troops capturing the Chinese capital Nanking and committed the Nanking Massacre. However, the Chinese relocated their capital and continued the struggle. The Japanese continued to advance, controlling much of the Chinese coast. But by late 1942 the Japanese success in China began to end.

War in China The Flying Tigers were a unit of American military pilots who served as part of the Chinese Air Force. The group consisted of three fighter squadrons with about 20 aircraft each and recorded over 100 kills. On July 4, 1942, the Flying Tigers were transferred back to the US Army Air Corps as the China Air Task Force. The Tigers' shark-faced fighters remain among the most recognizable of combat aircraft of World War II

War in China In an effort to keep China supplied with weapons and supplies, US transport flew missions from India to China over the Himalayans The airlift operated on a daily basis from May 1942 to August In addition to the Japanese, pilots had to battle 200 mph winds, icing, and inclement weather conditions Yet despite dangerous flying conditions, the US was able to bring in 650,000 tons of supplies.
