Ask: Is the video….. ACCURATE—Is the information accurate and worth the time spent? APPROPRIATE—Is it the most appropriate medium to convey the information? CONNECTED—Does it mesh with your curriculum’s scope and sequence INSTRUCTIONAL—Does using this video generate student-centered learning activities ?

First, always check the District Video site, title or subject may already be there for use. Submit suggestion orders to district office. School orders must be submitted through your Department Head and previewed for quality. Department Heads order through the school office with research and ordering help from the Library.

Research and use the library as a resource. Preview videos from other libraries, institutions, and schools. Never send in 30 day preview cards or purchase previously viewed videos. Use the best library video supply companies. They deal only with schools and provide copyright. #1 choice: Library Video Company. Worst choice: Teachers Video Print “For Face to Face Instruction” on all correspondence. Catalog all videos into the school library system and have receipts and proof of viewing rights on file. Donations are acceptable if the above procedures have been followed.

Make parents aware of all the questionable scenes, content, or language, even if you are not showing those sections to the students. Use selective viewing techniques to avoid possible negative outcomes. Provide alternative learning experiences.

Label with date of broadcast, channel, title of program, & production company. May be shown to students no more than twice within 10 days of broadcast date. 2nd time for reinforcement only. After 45 calendar days the tape must be erased. Tape Educational Basic Cable channels only.

School equipment may not be used to copy software & use of illegally copied software is prohibited. Software licensing agreements must be observed. Networking or multiple loading of one-site software is illegal.

Reproducing copyright, consumable materials, workbooks, activity sheets, etc., is prohibited. Copying selections from printed publications of any kind is limited to a single copy for research or preparation purposes. Any copyright, syndicated comic strip or cartoon character may not be reproduced or altered for bulletin boards or display.

Music recordings may not be copied. Music may be reproduced as background music for a slide presentation if the presentation is for instructional purposes, not for entertainment or open houses, etc. Sheet music may not be copied, except if ordered and not received. P.O. proof required and copies must be destroyed as soon as purchase arrives. Music may not be taped from a radio broadcast.

Fair Use Guidelines are written to support lawsuits in court for misuse only, not as an educational guideline. To comply with copyright laws, Jordan School District employees must abide by Jordan School District Copyright Guidelines.

10 minutes of any video? Tape Channel 7 or 11? Purchasing “Home Use Only” videos? Copying poems for class use? Questions? Ask the Principal or the Librarian.

You are informed, supported, and contracted with JSD to follow guidelines. Legal actions will be taken, and you will be on your own. Appropriate authorities & companies will be made aware of any infringement. $500-$20,000 per infringement. Statutory penalty may be raised to $100,000 if the law was broken by willful intent. $500-$250,000 per infringement and/or 1-5 years imprisonment if found guilty of willfully infringing the law for private or commercial gain.
