Welcome to 7 th Grade Reading!

A little about me…  I’m Mrs. Hilty  This is my 2 nd year at Fort Cherry Jr/Sr High and my 20 th year teaching.  I am certified in English 7-12, Reading Specialist and Special Education.

What to expect….  We will be reading novels such as ; The Watson’s Go to Birmingham, The Giver and A Long Walk to Water and My Brother Sam is Dead.  We will also be reading short stories, poetry and non- fiction text.  We will study vocabulary, reading strategies and writing skills.  We participate in group activities, complete projects and utilize technology.

AR Independent Reading  Goal: At least 16 points each quarter-includes our class novel  Can get books from class library, school library, community library, ebooks, home  They should read at least mins/at least 3 times per week  Read during AIRE time, study hall, before bed, on weekends  AR Log is a home work assignment- once a week  AR is a 100 point grade each quarter  Take tests during AIRE time, at beginning of class

Grading Policies Late Work Policy Classwork- 2 weeks as Missing Assignment then permanent zero Tests- 1 week for make up tests/retakes HWK- full credit day due ½ credit next day, after that permanent zero

Home Work

How you can help at home Check their agenda, ask about their reading home work. If they forgot to write it down- check the website. Check the website for class announcements. Encourage them to read their AR book 20 minutes a night (before bed is a great time), sign their AR reading log Look at their interactive reading binder with them, help study for tests and quizzes Check their MMS grade book, encourage them to complete all their assignments, quizzes and tests to the best of their ability.
