S TAR Assessment New Teacher Orientation

What is STAR? The Star is computer-adaptive comprehensive assessments taken in both ELA and Math in about 15–20 minutes sp?vid=STAR/What_IS_STAR.mp4http:// sp?vid=STAR/What_IS_STAR.mp4

What is it? STAR Enterprise assessments is a web-based assessment for testing students in order to pinpoint achievement levels quickly and efficiently. Using data developed by STAR psychometricians provides: - accurate predictive statistics - measures of student growth - learning progressions for guidance with detailed instructional planning - alignments to Common Core standards - are aligned to state standards - linked to state tests

Assesses 36 reading skills in five domains Word Knowledge Analyzing Literary Text Analyzing Argument and Evaluating Text Understanding Author’s Craft Comprehension Strategies and Constructing Meaning

Math Skills Tested in Four Domains Numbers and Operations Algebra Geometry and Measurement Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability ================================ The 558 grade-specific skills are organized into 53 sets of closely related skills.

What will it provide the educator? Student Growth Percentiles measurements Benchmarks for RTI state test performance - to show you if a student is on track to reach proficiency or in need of intervention - Core Progress learning progressions for math and reading Materials aligned to CCLS, state standards and linked to state tests so educators at all levels can individualize instruction to fill learning gaps Reports: Information on screening, progress-monitoring, instructional planning, state standards, CCLS standards, and state performance

How can the educator use STAR? STAR Data supports and helps educators bridge assessment and instruction Teachers can better identify best practices that are having a significant educational impact on student growth Provides instructional resources Maps prerequisite skills so teachers can plan better for students to learn Provides concrete steps toward meeting state standards and CCLS

How it will be carried out in MCSD Star Assessments will be administered pre and post year Students will take their tests in the computer labs Schedules will be provided by building principals Proctors will be faculty and staff other than the classes assigned teacher Teacher will analyze their classes data and use it to guide instructional planning
