Mass and Metric Conversions Why does mass matter? Notes: Metric Conversions Mini-Lab: – Ordinary Things – Mix and Match Mass Wrapping Up…. – Best Unit? – Mass Estimations? Homework: Conversion Challenge

Why does mass matter? Quarter 2: Forces - Requires an understanding of acceleration and mass. Notes: Mass – A measure of the amount of matter in an object. An indicator about how difficult it is to change an object’s motion or accelerate. A measure of the strength of its gravitational attraction to other bodies.

How do we measure mass? Notes: Mass is measured using the basic unit of measurement grams. – A penny has a mass of 2 grams. (2 g)

Notes: What are the prefixes for the metric units of measurement? Kilo – one thousand Hecto – one hundred Deka – ten Gram –one Deci – one tenth Centi – one hundredth Milli – one thousandth

KILO 1000 Units HECTO 100 Units DEKA 10 Units DECI 0.1 Unit CENTI 0.01 Unit MILLI Unit Meters Liters Grams Ladder Method (copy the ladder in your notes) How do you use the “ladder” method? 1 st – Determine your starting point. 2 nd – Count the “jumps” to your ending point. 3 rd – Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction. 4 km = _________ m How many jumps does it take? Starting Point Ending Point 4. 1 __. 2 3 = 4000 m

Try these conversions using the ladder method mg = _______ g 1 L = _______ mL160 cm = _______ mm 14 km = _______ m109 g = _______ kg 250 m = _______ km Conversion Practice Compare using, or =. 56 cm 6 m 7 g 698 mg ,000 1, , <>

Ordinary Things and Mix and Match Mass Ordinary Things – Find the mass in grams of four objects. – Convert grams to the remaining metric units of measurement. Mix and Match Mass – Choose an item(s) from the container on your table that will be closest to the targeted mass. Record the actual mass of your items. – Were you a mass master?

Best mass unit of measurement?

You best guess? 14 g

Your best guess? kg

Your best guess? g

Your best guess? 1.5 kg

You best guess? 1 teaspoon salt? ¾ teaspoon salt? ½ teaspoon salt? ¼ teaspoon salt?

Wrapping Up… What is mass? Why is understanding mass important to understanding motion?
