Combining two glucose molecules – C. Breaking carbon bonds in fatty acids – D. splitting the oxygen and hydrogen in a water molecule

Adenosine TriPhosphate Let’s Get Energized!!!

Energy The ability to do work – What do you need to do your school work? – Think, run to class, sit in seats, write, think more!

ATP Adenosine Triphosphate Energy in the cell

What is ATP made of? Adenosine (adenine and ribose) with 3 (tri) phosphate groups attached

Cellular Energy Stored in chemical bonds between the phosphate groups The last 2 phosphate bonds are HIGH ENERGY Breaking the bonds releases energy

Energy Released Energy is released when you take away a phosphate from ATP to form ADP – ATP  ADP + P (phosphate) – Start with ATP, energy comes out so cells can work!

ADP Adenosine Diphosphate – Di means 2 – You have 2 phosphate groups!

Adenosine Diphosphate Breaking the last phosphate bond in ADP can convert it to AMP (Adenosine Monophosphate) ADP can be rejoined to the free phosphate to make more ATP

Energy needed It takes energy to add a phosphate to ADP – ADP + P (phosphate)  ATP – ADP puts energy in

Sooooo….. To release energy: – Break a Bond To store energy: – Make a Bond
