Preventing Summer Slide Making Summer Learning Fun

What is summer slide? Most students lose 2 months of reading and math achievement during the summer months. That means students score better on the same test at the beginning of the summer than they do at the end.

Think, Pair, Share What do you think you could do in the summer to prevent learning loss?

Ideas to prevent summer slide

Reading Read aloud Check in on comprehension and fluency. Make your child accountable for their own learning. Read often Reading 4 to 6 books over the summer has been shown to prevent learning loss. Talk about what you read It’s important to make connections and show that reading is valuable.

Math Play math games Use your technology! There are fun games on smart phones, the TCSD website, and websites like pbskids.org Cook with your child Use measuring and mathematical skills to make yummy foods! Start a small business Teach your child about monetary math by helping them start a lemonade stand or similar business.
