Valence Electrons- electrons located on the outermost shell.

November 4, 2014  Draw Bohr Models for the following elements, then write the number of valence electrons for each: Helium, Nitrogen, Beryllium

Group 1 Have 1 valence electron Most reactive metals on the Periodic Chart. Usually exists combined with other elements.

Alkali Metals Clip

Alkaline Earth Metals Group 2 Very Reactive, but not as reactive as alkali metals 2 Valence Electrons

Transition Metals Groups 3-12 Have 1 or 2 Valence Electrons Less reactive than groups 1 and 2- which makes them more useful. Most are good conductors of electricity and thermal energy. Often used for industrial purposes.

Maker Space Reflection  1. What challenges did you have to overcome to make your project?  2. What are you most proud of about your make?  3. What did you learn about yourself AND your career from your project?

Thursday, November 13th  We are low in density and have low melting points. We are usually found combined with other elements in nature. Who are we?  We are great conductors of electricity and thermal energy. We have high densities and melting points- this makes us very useful for industrial purposes. Who are we? Alkali Metals Alkaline Earth Metals Transition Metals

Lanthanides (Rare Earth Metals) Part of Period 6 of Transition Metals. Shiny, Reactive, Metals. Some are used to make steel.

Actinides(Rare Earth Metals) Period 7 of the Transition Metals. Are radioactive (unstable). Elements after Plutonium are made in laboratories.

Monday, November 17, 2014  True or False. Explain your answers. 1. Lanthanides and actinides are in the same period. 2. Lanthanides and actinides are transition metals. 3. Lanthanides and actinides are separated from the rest of the periodic table because they are not useful.

In your notebooks, Draw Bohr Models for boron, aluminum, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Do you notice anything about the group number and the number of valence electrons?

Halogens Group 17 Very Reactive Nonmetals Poor conductors of electricity Violently reacts with alkali metals (group 1) to form salts. 7 valence electrons

Noble Gases Group 18 8 Valence Electrons (except for Helium) UnReactive, because outershell is complete.

Hydrogen Does not belong to a group. A nonmetal and gas with 1 valence electron. Very reactive, reacts violently with oxygen (used in rocket fuel)

Tuesday, November 18, I am a group all by myself and my position on the periodic table is usually near the Alkali Metals. Who am I? 2. We are highly reactive nonmetals and we especially like to react with Alkali Metals. Who are we? 3. We are stable and don’t need any other element to make us complete. Who are we?

Classwork/Homework (must do assignment) Create a 10 Question Multiple Choice Quiz WITH THE CORRECT ANSWERED CIRCLED. Example: Which of the following elements is a liquid? a. Mercury b. Nickel c. Argon

Wednesday, November 19, Many of us are gases, brittle, and are poor conductors of electricity. 2. We can be shiny, we can also be brittle, some of us are good conductors of electricity at high temperatures. 3. We are malleable and ductile, great conductors of heat and electricity, and known for our lustrous shine. metalsnonmetalsmetalloids

Thursday, November 20, 2014 Get out your notebook. Have a seat.
