Why Road Safety and pedestrian issue? - India has the highest number of accidents in the world, - Chennai 4 th highest in number of accidents after Mumbai, Delhi & Bangalore - Chennai 3 rd highest in number of people killed in road accidents after Delhi. - Chennai topped the charts from and has 3rd highest number of accidents in Source: Road Accident in India 2008, Transport Research Wing, Ministry of Road Transport and Highway Department, GoI, Delhi Accident comparison in different cities in 2008

Why do these accidents occur? Reckless and high speed driving by the motorists. Inadequate/ Inefficient enforcement of traffic laws by the traffic police. (Drunken driving) Inadequate infrastructure for the vulnerable section. Increasing number of vehicles. (Photos and Stats)

Causes Chennai Metro coming on 2 nd Avenue. Changing Land-use from Residential to Commercial. Increasing Traffic diverted from flooded EVR Salai & 2 nd Avenue. Inadequate Parking Space. No traffic Signals, Zebra Crossing & Pedestrian Crossings. Increasing Accidents and Traffic Snarls. Deteriorating Sidewalks/ Pavements. Multiple junctions/ crossing.
