Shivani Kumar (University of Massachusetts Medical School) As a UMMS SIG leader for the last 2 years, I have worked to think of out of the box ideas for our students interested in surgery. Prior to attending medical school, I embarked on a surgical mission trip to Honduras. I was inspired by this trip and wanted to bring surgical mission trips to the SIG at UMMS. UMMS SIG participated in fundraising and shared the trip's mission, goals and objectives to the student body. We aimed to raise awareness of surgical needs in underdeveloped countries and share with our peers the opportunity for surgical mission trips, just like medically focused ones. This unique opportunity has given students seriously interested in surgery early exposure to the OR, exposure to global medicine and care in under-served populations and a chance to learn about surgical theory and develop surgical skills well before their clinical years.
