So, why the buzz about money? How much does it cost?

Who Offers Awards? High schools, post- secondary schools, provincial and federal governments; Community groups, service organizations, companies, and private individuals.

Types of Scholarships 1. PSI SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES Apply to the post-secondary school first Fill in the separate award application There are strict deadlines! Often requires a minimal academic standing in an “admission average”. Many awards will also ask for a history of extra- curricular and/or community activities you have participated in throughout high school.

What’s an admission average? The five courses you need to present in order to attend a university or transfer college. Different faculties require different courses. English 30-1 is always a requirement. Many faculties will include your band, choir, art and/or PE classes. These “option” courses are an excellent way to raise your admission average for both acceptance and $$$$.

Faculty example – 5 courses. This example is for the U of C. Other universities demand different criteria. Bachelor of Science 1. English Math Two of: Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30 or Math One other 5 credit (or 2, 3- credit courses) excluding special projects. This is where band, PE, work experience, info pro, foods, etc. fits in. Bachelor of Fine Arts English subjects from Social 30-1, Math 30 (pure or applied), 2 nd language or any of the sciences. 2 subjects from band, art, choir or anything mentioned above. 1 subject can be any other grade 12 course excluding special projects.

2 nd type of scholarship – general awards offered by government, industry & community Different awards require different criteria. Academic: overall average, admission average, or sometimes your final mark in a particular group of subjects. Leadership, community service, school participation in clubs, organizations, athletics. Sometimes just an essay References FILL IN THE APPLICATION!! 2 hours of work could be $500 or more. That’s $250/hour!

Application Dates & Apply AB Post –Secondary Institutions may begin accepting applications in early fall for the next Sept. Watch for dates. Early admission offers are based on grade 11 marks and projected marks

Alexander Rutherford Scholarship for high school achievement – Alberta Government award. Value: Up to $2,500 Selection: Achieving an percent average on five designated subjects in Grades, 10, 11 and/or 12. A student need not have achieved this average in all three grades to qualify for a portion of the scholarship. Eligibility: Alberta residents who plan to enrol or are enrolled in a full-time post-secondary program of at least one semester Deadline: May 1 for September start date. Application forms are available in the Career & Guidance Office.

Courses for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship. Minimum overall average of 75% Grade 10 75%-79.9%= $300 80% = $ English 10-1 or Two from: Math 10C; Science 10; Social 10-1, or 10-2; or 2 nd language course. 3. any 2 other courses at the grade 10 level except special projects & work experience. Grade 11 75%-79.9%= $500 80% = $ English 20-1 or Two from: Math 20-1, or Math 20- 2; Science 20, Chemistry 20, Biology 20, Physics 20, Social 20-1, or 20-2, or a 2 nd language at the 20 level. 3. Any 2 other courses at the grade 11 level except work experience or special projects.

Grade 12 courses for the Alexander Rutherford Scholarship 75%-79.9% = $700 80% = $1,300 English or 30-2 Four from the following list: – Math 30-1, or 30-2 – Mathematics 31 – Science 30 – Biology 30 and/or Chemistry 30 and/or Physics 30 – Social Studies 30-1, or 30-2 – 2 nd language other than the one used above at the Grade 12 level – 2 five credit option in the 3000 or 6000 series – 5 one credit CTS course in the Advanced Module. Marks will be averaged There is not a time limit to apply for the scholarship. Only apply when you Intend to pursue post-secondary studies. Scholarships & Bursaries

Bow Valley High Local Scholarships Scholarship Committee consisting of representatives from each department, administration and guidance. Occasionally a member of the business community that is sponsoring the scholarship. Students will be nominated by the committee.

How to Apply Begin researching scholarship information in grade 11. Request forms early from the career & guidance centre or the website. Allow plenty of time before the deadline to gather all of the information, get references, prepare essays, etc. Photocopy all of your information. Keyboard your responses, if possible. Be accurate, honest and send in a neat application. You are representing yourself in the best light. Send applications by registered mail, if they are to be mailed.

Post-Secondary and Career Research Resources Start researching in grade nine! 1. Research various institutions/programs offered Career Center 2. Prioritize the “best fit” for you ie: achievement, admission requirements,& cost 3. Determine deadlines for institution of choice 4. Apply on line (if help is needed contact Guidance) 5. Follow-up with application. If you are conditionally accepted you will receive an id. number and the post-secondary institution will correspond with you directly. 6. Go to the Awards link on web-site to find more information on scholarships 7. Do “Do What You Are” Inventory with Mrs. Allen and follow-up with Mrs. Allen and Mrs. Higgins, to help the decision making process.
