 Directed by the Institutional Veterinarian  Responsibility for managing:  Animal care staff  Animal housing and procedure space  Animal husbandry and medical care  Animal ordering  Non-lab specific animal husbandry supplies  Training  In this structure, Investigator issues are addressed by the Director/Institutional Veterinarian or by their delegate (such as vet tech, finance manager, supervisors)

 Starting July 1 all animal facilities and their staff are the responsibility of Office of Animal Resources (OAR).  All staff report to the Director of OAR  New Employees  Micah Stoltz, Facility Supervisor, Transgenics  Toni Mufford, Veterinary Technician  Barb Pfister, Financial Manager

 Monday August 26, 2013 ALL animal orders must be processed through the Office of Animal Resources  Use the Animal Order form and Submit by NOON on Wednesday to  OAR will do the following  Order animals from vendors and recharge your speedtype of animal order  Work with the IACUC to deduct numbers from your protocol  Notify you of any issues with your animal order and resolve those issues  Notify facility of your impending order  Questions - OAR Finance Manager, Barb Pfister or

 Needs to be completed by everyone who completed IACUC training prior to 11/30/12  Those individuals were ed last week Reminder: the quiz needs to be ed back to Dr. Cher Masini by Sept 3 rd

 Required for both Animal and Human health  Based on the Guide, NIH (OLAW), and existing UCB laboratory safety policies  Safe laboratory clothing: Closed-toed shoes, Long pants  Designated Clothing or cover over that clothing  Gloves  Shoes covers (no more spraying shoes)  Eye protection  Hair bonnets  Mask When? Where? Contact: Soda Sonoda or Cher Masini

 PPE: Clean lab coat, Mask, Hair cover, Gloves  Gloves:  Sterile surgical gloves REQUIRED if touching sterile field  Clean exam gloves permitted for “tips only”  Pre-operative prep of animals  During – maintain sterile field and instruments  Bead sterilizer in between animals  Use a new pack or resterilize instruments at least every 5 animals  Post-operative  Analgesia, fluids, etc (see SOP 21 – will be reviewed by IACUC in Aug)  Monitoring  Documentation of anesthesia, procedure, and post-operative care and monitoring (including when provide analgesia)

 Minimum requirements:  The Surgical site is to be clipped  The Surgeon will wear gloves  The instruments and surrounding areas are clean  May use expired medical materials (NOT anesthetics or analgesics) ▪ If using them, they MUST be clearly labeled for acute procedures and be physically separate from non-expired materials  For nonsurvival procedures of extended duration:  attention to aseptic technique may be important in order to ensure stability of the model and a successful outcome.

 All rodents donated to Birds of Prey must be euthanized with CO2  Transgenic animals cannot be donated to Birds of Prey

 Individuals must be qualified and trained  Carbon Dioxide Source  Gas cylinders only  No mixing of species or animals from different cages  Ideally use the animals home cage  Follow posted procedures  Flow meters  Confirmation of death with secondary method  Must be reviewed and approved by the IACUC

 All transport must be reviewed and approved by the IACUC  Transport animals in approved transport containers.  Only carry animals from the same home cage  Cover the cages when taking them to your lab  Sheet, trash bag, opaque transport container  Carry multiple cages on a cart  Use routes that minimize contact with the public  Animals are permitted to remain in labs for up to 24 hours (unless preapproved as a satellite)  Follow proper traffic patterns

 The new protocol form will prompt investigators to provide important information in accordance with the regulatory requirements and the 8 th Addition of the Guide.  The old protocol and addendum form will no longer be accepted after August 19.

 Scientific justification and monitoring:  Food and fluid restrictions, prolonged restraint, pain category E procedures  Humane Endpoints  Enrichment exemptions  Single housing of rodents  Non-pharm grade chemicals and method of dilutions  Steps to minimize pain, distress, discomfort and injury  Written assurance regarding unnecessary duplication  Written narrative (searches) to show that less distressful alternatives were not available for Pain Categories D or E
