Types of Social Interaction Lesson Three Choose Your Own Adventure

Today’s Main Idea: The five types of social interaction are basic to group life; cooperation, conflict, social exchange, coercion and conformity.

Directions: You are going to work with a partner to complete these notes. Please follow the directions as you go along. You will not have lecture notes on this material, so you need to be thorough and accurate! Print these to OneNote when you are finished.

I – Five Types of Social Interaction: Social interaction is crucial to social structure and groups. In a group settings, people take on ___________________ and __________________________________________. Why do our interactions change depending on the situation?

II - Cooperation: Cooperation – (define in your own words) Explain the role that resources play in cooperation. Cooperation exists outside of emergencies; children set the rules to games; students organize clubs, etc… Please write three examples of your own!

III - Conflict: Conflict – (define in your own words) In conflict defeating your opponent is essential to success and at times causes us to loose sight of the true purpose Explain why and how conflict can be beneficial to society. (list at least three examples)

IV - Social Exchange: Social Exchange – (define in your own words) In a social exchange it is the benefit to be earned that is more important than the relationship. Reciprocity – (define in your own words) Explain the difference between reciprocity and social exchange. Create your own example and explain.

V – Coercion: _________________ - is the social interaction in which individuals or groups are forced to give in to the will of other individuals or groups. Explain the relationship between coercion and social exchange. Why does conflict theory explain coercion best?

VI – Conformity: Conformity- (define using your own words) Using several bullet points (three or four at least) explain what the Asher Experiment shows us about conformity.

VII - What is group think? Group Think – (define in using your own words) Explain at least one of the historical examples of group think your book gives you.

VIII – Social Interaction and the Framework: Use the chart on page 186 to complete the chart on the next page. The table on the next slide illustrates how each theoretical perspective might approach the study of social structures.
