Where in the World? HOT CLIMATE

Lesson 1: Geography How do we describe a place?

What is geography? Open a glossary from Moodle. Label it ‘Unit 1: Geography’ Geography: the study of the world, its people, and the landscapes people have created. Landscapes are made up of human and physical features. Geographers try to make sense of the world around us. Their work helps us understand how people, places and environments came to be and how they affect each other. When geographers look at something on Earth, they ask questions. Where is it? Why is it there? How did it get there? How does it affect the people living there? How does it affect the natural environment in this area?

Where did Ms. Clarke spend her summer??

Goal for Today: By the end of class today you will: Be able to define and explain geography Be able to describe a place using human and physical characteristics

Physical and Human Characteristics: A PLACE can be identified through its PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS and through its HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS. What is the difference?

Physical and Human Characteristics: Add to your glossary… Place: an area of the Earth’s surface that can be described by its special physical and human characteristics Physical characteristics: the features of landscape, climate and vegetation (plant life) that make one place different from another (ex. elevation, climate, plants, animals, landscape) Human Characteristics: features related to people that can make one place different from another (ex. language, religion, structures, food, population, culture, government, economy, urban vs rural)
