The film is about the recruitment of soldiers in different countries participating in World War I. It tells how the front lines were expanded. The protagonists describe the daily grind in danger of death and the cries of the wounded, their trials to survive at the front line.

Military service in Britain wasn´t compulsory – so the first soldiers were volunteers. Later Britain recruited not only men from the island- men from the whole Commonwealth were under arms. In Germany there were also volunteers- e.g. Ernst Jünger who wanted to escape from civic life and become a hero or Peter Kollwitz who volunteered for patriotic reasons. In most countries military service was compulsory.
