Summary The beginning of the First World War Recruitment Charles Edward Montague Ernst Jünger Trench Warfare Life in Trench Warefare Propaganda Munitions in the First World War Our Painting List of Sources

The film is about the recruitment of soldiers in different countries participating in World War I. It tells how the front lines were expanded. The protagonists describe the daily grind in danger of death and the cries of the wounded, their trials to survive at the front line.

Austria‘s and Hungary‘s declaration of war on Serbia on July 28th, 1914: flashpoint that initiated the First World War. based on the assassination of Sarajevo in June 28th, modern weapon system met a taditional form of warfare - mobile warfare  static warfare first : Western front ( France/Belgium) soon: Eastern front at the Black Sea is established

Military service in Britain wasn´t compulsory – so the first soldiers were volunteers. Later Britain recruited not only men from the island- men from the whole Commonwealth were under arms. In Germany there were also volunteers- e.g. Ernst Jünger who wanted to escape from civic life and become a hero or Peter Kollwitz who volunteered for patriotic reasons. In most countries military service was compulsory.

English writer, World War I soldier, journalist and poet volunteered at the age of 47 to go into the trenches, had no prior military experience in his opinion, the war was a fight between the German barbarism and the Western civilisation for him war was a place for adventures

- volunteered for the war - escape from school and examinations -survives the punishment of a patrol in the no man´s land between the trenches

France against Germany at the westfront Brits confederate with France Both sides consolidated defensive positions by digging trenches, which were protected by barbed wire, sandbags and armed soldiers. injured soldiers couldn´t be retrieved

- bad hygienic conditions, no elbow-room constant threat of death on the battlefield -lice and rats were constant torments. The deep mud and slime gave rise to a crippling condition known as 'trench foot' - armed with good soldiers - constant fear of death and injury - place of adversity, hunger, chaos, death - abhorred place for the soldiers

Nobody had espected a long war – but soon: propaganda concealed the facts: hunger, death The front line was called „home line“ in order to consolidate the so-called „home-feeling“ False reports regarding the actions of the enemies in order to stoke hate Censorship regarding news about the war
