English 3 Ms. Roule

Bellringer (Re-write to correct)  some friends is going apple picking in indiana this weekend because of the drought however there are not many apples

Agenda  Bellringer  Reflection on yesterday  Community appeal letter

Performance Task – Reflection  Write response on the back of your bellringer sheet:  How did you feel about your ability to complete the task yesterday? What was the easiest part? What was the most challenging part?  You will have to take a similar assessment at the end of the year. Based on how yesterday went for you, what specific skills do you know you need to work on this year?

Community Appeal Letter  Your final writing task in our unit on rhetorical appeals is a community appeal letter.  First draft due on Monday, October 1 at the beginning of class  You will have today’s class to plan and develop draft (participation grade)  Be sure to use each of the rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) in your writing.

How do I write using ethos?  Remember, ethos is about your audience’s perception of you.  Why are you believable as a speaker?  What have you done that shows you care about your community?  How will you relate your experience to that of your audience?

How do I write using pathos?  Use (appropriate) emotionally charged language to describe the examples you use to persuade.

How do I write using logos?  Use numbers/facts/statistics to support your request.  Research to find out what statistics might apply to your situation (don’t just make them up)  Don’t forget, logos isn’t JUST about numbers…use lists of information, etc., to support your request…

Community appeal letter  You are a community activist trying to raise money to fight violence in your community. Your task is to write a letter to one of the following recipients, requesting their assistance: a local business owner with two teenage sons, a reformed gang member who has just published a bestselling book, or the host of a national radio program.  First draft due MONDAY!
