Teacher Overview

 This case will challenge the investigator to develop a timeline using only the WPA narrative. After searching for Mrs. Fayman’s mother, father, and enslaver no further information was available. Overview# 1: Mrs. Fayman

 Overview # 1: Primary Sources Guide to Documents:  1 Folder  4 jpg scans of WPA narrative  pages are numbered

 This case presents some documentation related to the WPA narrative, but it is missing the Census data that would fill in gaps in the economic story. The Census data of the Davidson family reflects the economic changes that followed the Civil War. Overview# 2: Caroline Hammond

 Overview # 2: Primary Sources (1) Guide to Documents:  Folder 1  3 jpg scans of WPA narrative  pages are numbered

 Overview # 2: Primary Sources (2) Guide to Documents:  Folder 2  6 jpg scans of U.S. Census records for Thomas and Jane Davidson family  based on the narrative, Caroline Hammond is the unnamed 16 y.o. Female at the bottom of the left column on the Slave Census

 Overview # 2: Primary Sources (3) Guide to Documents:  Folder 3  5 jpg scans of the Baltimore Howard House  employer of Mr. Berry & likely also Caroline Hammond

 This case presents the fullest documentation of the four researched, but also has its own challenges in the length of the narrative, use of Southern black vernacular in the WPA transcription and in the amount of documentation. Overview # 3: Jim Allen

 Overview # 3: Primary Sources (1) Guide to Documents:  Folder 1  10 jpg scans of WPA narrative  pages are numbered

 Overview # 3: Primary Sources (2) Guide to Documents:  Folder 2  2 jpg scans of U.S. Census documents for John Bussey  owner of Jim Allen’s mother

 Overview # 3: Primary Sources (3) Guide to Documents:  Folder 3  2 jpg scans of U.S. Census documents for Dr. William H Robinson  owner of Jim Allen’s father

 Overview # 3: Primary Sources (4) Guide to Documents:  Folder 4  4 jpg scans of U.S. and Alabama Census documents for Robert Allen  last owner of Jim Allen

 Overview # 3: Primary Sources (5) Guide to Documents:  Folder 5  2 jpg scans of U.S. Census documents for Jim Allen

 This case is the only one which extends to the grandchild of a freedman. It also reflects the experience of many researchers in this field of U.S. history: partial documentation, no WPA narrative, and gaps in the record. However, it also includes a criminal warrant record, photos and other documents to allow inferences the other cases lack. Also, it shows how some families began to “pass” into white society: “Andies” is listed as both colored and white on the same bench warrant roster, “Adock” is born black but dies white. Dates on documents are approximate unless clearly legible in the photo. Story 4 Overview: Wesley McCoy

 Overview # 4: Primary Sources (1) Guide to Documents:  Folder 1  Wesley McCoy; U.S. Census records for John McCoy  likely owner of Wesley  U.S. Census Record for Wesley McCoy Family  Death Record for Wesley

 Overview # 4: Primary Sources (2) Guide to Documents:  Folder 2  Andies Buford McCoy  Marriage Certificate, Census Record  City Directory  Probate Record  WWI Draft Card  Bench Warrants  WWII Draft Card  Cemetery  Family Picture

 Overview # 4: Primary Sources (3)

 Overview # 4: Primary Sources (4) Guide to Documents:  Folder 3  Adock William McCoy  1923: Family picture  1936: Social Security Application  1940: US Census  1945: DD 214 US Navy Discharge  1989: Death Certificate
