Discipline: Are we willing to learn?

How are you going to run? When faced with difficulty, our response determines the outcome. I’m here Go Ahead Training

How are you going to run? Difficulties will still come. They will either enslave and destroy or they will build and prepare. Training

Main Idea of Hebrews By persevering faith, we can have partnership with God’s King/Priest Son !

Genesis 25:29-31 Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom. But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.”

Genesis 10:32-34 And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?” Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 Since a bad response can have eternal consequences, get perspective and help others do the same.

Hebrews 10:12-13 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

Choices: – Heb. 12:12-13 The concern throughout this section is both individual and corporate.

When people fail, they may take others with them… SAMPLE

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 There is no effective repentance in eternity!

Isaiah 35:1-2 The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for them, And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose; It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice, Even with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, The excellence of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the L ORD, The excellency of our God.

Isaiah 35:3-4 Strengthen the weak hands, And make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are fearful-hearted, “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, With the recompense of God; He will come and save you.”

Choices: – Heb. 12:12-13 So, the concern is corporate…. “hands…knees” …and individual… “make straight paths for your feet”

Choices: – Heb. 12:12-13 And, the context is the Kingdom!

Choices: – Heb. 12:12-13 Our task is to: Respond well to discipline and Encourage others as they face difficulty; don’t hurt them further!

Choices: – Heb. 12:12-13 The theme of encouragement toward others is a consistent one in Hebrews 3:12-13; 10:25-26

How do we encourage? Recognize when others are challenged Respond when others are challenged Pray: regularly and specifically Listen Connect with them Calls Coffee/meals Notes, s, texts, messages Re-connect When appropriate, share wisdom/truth

Romans 12:9-13 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.

Romans 12:14-16 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

Romans 12:17-21 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Choices: – Heb. 12:12-13 “Put out of joint” “Turned aside” When we don’t respond well, the result is loss instead of healing.

Hebrews 12:14-15 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

Choices: – Heb. 12:14-15 We are to work hard to: Have good relationships and Become holy, like Jesus Why?

Choices: – Heb. 12:14-15 Otherwise, people won’t see the Lord among us. 1 John 4:12

No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.

Choices: – Heb. 12:14-15 We are to “watch out” for other believers and make sure there are no issues (“root of bitterness”) between us!

Choices: – Heb. 12:14-15 Few things drive people away from the church faster than issues between us!

Choices: – Heb. 12:14-15 When we don’t deal with problems, we come short of God’s grace, bitterness develops, and “many become defiled”. No matter how much we say otherwise, it really is more than just “my life” in Christ.

Hebrews 10:16-17 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 Esau was immature and became immoral (3 wives) and worldly with no regard for spiritual things.

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 That can, and does, happen to believers.

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 Esau was in line to become the Abrahamic heir and chose stew instead.

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 For a single moment of sensual pleasure, he gave up a lifetime of reward. …and so can we!

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 There are times repentance comes too late.

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 Keep in mind that this issue here was not his eternal life, but the “blessing” of the inheritance, as it is with us.

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 There is no effective repentance in eternity!

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 SAMPLE

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 Since a bad response can have eternal consequences, get perspective and help others do the same.

Choices: – Heb. 12:16-17 As a believer, you will learn your lesson. The question is: Will you learn it in time?
