Introduction to Web Authoring Bill Hart-Davidson AIM: billhd30 Session 19

Today in Class… 1.Wrap-up for P2 - any remaining questions? 2.P3 projects & teams 3.Designing your inquiry for P3 - first steps

WS Project Proposals* Sean Fox-Elster - Elementary School Site (U/S) Eleanor Wisenbaugh - Film Studies Site (S/U) Nathan Boes - Church Site (S/CMS) James Burke - Clark Associates (U) Reed Kalso - Allen Park Library (U) * For groups

When we say “Web Standards…” 1.HTML 4 2.CSS Section Best practices for web design, navigation These are all subject to some interpretation depending on the goals of the organization and their users

The Big Three & Arguments for Web Standards Usability Sustainability Accessibility Helps to ensures consistency of user experience across devices;

The Big Three: Inquiry Methods Usability Sustainability Accessibility Compliance checks using automated tools Scenario-based testing Heuristic Evaluation Scenario-based testing Genre Analysis Workflow analysis

HTML compliance check Usability Sustainability Accessibility Compliance checks using automated tools Scenario-based testing Heuristic Evaluation Scenario-based testing Genre Analysis Workflow analysis

Research design chart (RDC) Question 1 Question 2 Data source questions data sources methodsWho/when? interview scenario This chart allows you to plan and a discovery effort in a systematic way. Note that it does not ask you to answer the questions…but only to show you expect to arrive at the answers! Team members, target date

RDC Example What problems do students have with the current SIS interface? Admissions staff Students question data sources methodsWho/when? Joe & Jane; Completed by 4/2 interview Scenario- based user tests of current system Whole team 5-10 students tested by 4/15 This could be a usability or accessibility issue…how might the question change?

Make a GANTT chart Nov December Interviewing Staff Final Report due Students User testing Current system Create samples Progress Report due Web prototype Draft final Report due Genre analysis (similar sites) You can assign names to each task too Note that writing happens throughout… not as a separate phase

Problem Analysis Procedure for teams 1.Read the liaison’s proposal 2.Analyze the author’s framing of the problem and brainstorm other possible issues 3.Collect the issues as a set of client “needs”…make a list of these 4.Write research questions that will allow you to gather info, flesh out the list of needs, and begin the design process 5.For each question determine what source or sources of info you’ll need to consult to answer the question

Create you own RDC 1.Plug the questions into the RDC format we looked at today 2.Use the last two columns of the RDC to make a GANTT chart 3.For your progress report, be prepared to show your RDC and GANTT chart in class, talking through your project plan, what you have accomplished up to that point and what work you have remaining

For Next Time 1.More about your first deliverable for P3: progress report 2.More about Scenario-based testing for Usability & Accessibility Participation Activity today: Create slots for your P3 deliverables on your project page or on a new P3 team page
