Lesson #2 NAOMI’S RETURN RUTH FROM START2FINISH

EXAMINATION God “visited” Israel as way of beckoning Naomi home from Moab At the center of Ruth’s story is the Hebrew “hesed,” meaning “mercy” or “unfailing love” Orpah was not expected to stay with Naomi, which makes Ruth’s faithfulness even more remarkable Even in her grief, Naomi expressed conviction that God was still in control of all things

APPLICATION BITTERNESS—Whenever we are at our lowest points, it’s easy to believe the lie that God has abandoned us in our troubles. PRESENCE—Our faithful presence could be the final flicker of hope to which the lost and despairing cling in their darkest hour. COMMUNITY—In dealing with tragedy, God blesses us through the community of faith.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION RUTH FROM START2FINISH

1. In Scripture, what does it mean for God to “visit” his people?

2. In your own words, describe the meaning of the Hebrew hesed.

3. Why did Naomi feel empty when she returned to Bethlehem?

4. Though she felt empty, why was this a false feeling in reality?

5. What name for God did Naomi use in 1:20? Why was this choice of names significant?

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION RUTH FROM START2FINISH

1. How can bitterness or self-pity stall the healing process?

2. How can community help the healing process?

3. Why is it so difficult to be a faithful friend to the hurting?

4. In what ways can we reflect Jesus’ faithful love to the hurting?

5. Though they have more options at their disposal compared to ancient times, why/how do widows still need our support?
