Lesson 5: Engineering: the right job for me?

Introduction The purpose of this lesson is to take a closer look at the kind of career pathways open to young people within the engineering construction industry. Lesson 5: Engineering: the right job for me?

Objectives To know how young engineers enter the engineering construction industry To compare and contrast the experiences of apprentices To suggest a career pathway for new entrants to the industry Lesson 5: Engineering: the right job for me?

What characteristics do these young apprentices display? Lesson 5: Engineering: the right job for me? Click to play

What characteristics do these young apprentices display? What are their ambitions now? Lesson 5: Engineering: the right job for me?

Using the four career profiles find out for each person: Which aspect of engineering construction are they involved with? What was their starting point? How did they get involved with engineering construction? What qualifications did they acquire? What experiences have they had? … Lesson 5: Engineering: the right job for me?

… Who have they worked for? How do they feel they have benefitted from working in engineering construction?

Working in pairs read the student profile you have been given and, using the internet for research: select the area of engineering construction the student should focus on select a suitable apprenticeship route suggest what kind of work they might be involved with speculate how their careers might progress suggest what their first step should be. Create a poster to illustrate your chosen career pathway. What does a career route based on apprenticeship with qualifications achieved over time offer over a university degree?
