SBAC Tips/Rules PLEASE TAKE NOTES IN YOUR SPIRAL. THESE WILL BE ON YOUR VOCABULARY TEST ON FRIDAY, MAY 13 TH. YOU WILL NEED TO MEMORIZE THEM IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY KNOW THEM….LOTS ARE REVIEW!

If it says to “write an explanatory article” or “write a letter”, what do you write?  ALWAYS a five-paragraph essay

The three types of SBAC essays are:  Narrative  Explanatory  Argumentative

Which type of essay has grays?  argumentative

Which type of essay is told in first person?  Narrative

Grays go in ___body____ paragraphs. You’ll try to have __1___ gray in each __body__ paragraph. You can choose from: *rhetorical question *concession/rebuttal

Definitions  A rhetorical question is:  a question that doesn’t require an answer

Definitions  A concession/rebuttal is:  A counterargument --- admitting you see the other side and replying with your own side/opinion

In an argumentative essay… Cannot argue ___both sides/middle___. Pick __one__ side only.

How many paragraphs (minimum) do you need on an SBAC essay?  Five

What is the order of colors in an INTRO?  Blue (1)  Green (1)  Yellow (3)

What is the order of colors in body paragraphs?  Yellow  Reds  Pinks  Light Pinks

How many MIMIMUM (number of) items do you need on an SBAC essay outline?  50

How many yellows will you have in your essay?  Three

# of quotes (light pinks) in essay  Six (two each body paragraph)

How many anecdotes should be in the essay?  Three (one in each body paragraph)

An anecdote is:  A little “story” personal to yourself or others you know

You can make up ___anecdotes___ (light pinks) as long as they are ___realistic____

These are the steps to an SBAC essay: 1. Outline (50 items) 2. Rough draft (yellow/written) 3. Revise/edit 4. Final draft typed

Which of these will DEFINITELY be handwritten?  Outline  Rough draft

When revising, you will have a ____dictionary__ and __ thesaurus__ online to use. You will also have __spellcheck___

Dates/Times Essay will be on ___Friday, May 20 th ___ ALL day long and ___many more days if needed__.

Supplies  You will have notebook paper (__white__) for the outline… __yellow__ paper for the rough draft,.

Tests/Dates  The reading test will be __Thursday, May 19 th __. There are two parts. We’ll take __one__ in the morning and __one__ after lunch. Again, you have many more __days__ as needed.  If you get done early, just like __MAP__, you will stay there until the end of testing. Take your book.

What to Bring?  Several sharpened pencils  Book to read  Headphones/earbuds (if you have them)

Tips for answering multiple choice questions  Read the entire question and selection first  Eliminate answers (cross out feature – actually cross out)  If it says “choose all that apply” – it will likely be more than one

 If you want to _eliminate__ answers, __right__ click and use the strike through tool.

On the reading test, you will… A. ___preview___ questions and __all__ answers first before answering multiple choice. B. __get rid of__(narrow down) for multiple choice questions. C. __look back__ at the text/reread as needed.

Timing Out  You can stay on a question for __20 minutes__ or longer. Just before the __20 minutes__ is up, you need to push a key or wiggle the mouse so the test doesn’t __freeze/log you out__.  What if I really don’t know it and want to skip it? You can __flag__ an answer, but only within the same __section__. Also, we highly recommend you take the questions __in order__. It is like the MAP test… based on what you answer, it determines your ___next question__

SBAC rules  Complete sentences with punctuation  Restate the question  Give three details or one more than requested  Use direct quotes “” from the text  Quotes support answer  Quotes explain/tie back to the question

Finished!  Now that you have finished your notes, you may work on other work, the word search, your spiral, etc. You may also play Cool Math or Free Rice if you are done with everything.
