The Assignment Historical ContextHistorical Context: Port cities, like New York City, were centers of protest. In New York, disputes arose over Parliament’s tax laws, such as the Stamp Act. Parenthetical Citations (MLA)  Cite all of your evidence in the body paragraphs. AFTER  Citations belong at the end of the sentence in parenthesis with the period AFTER the parenthesis.  Many New Yorkers did not like the Stamp Act, which mandated that they pay a tax on items such as newspapers and playing cards (Panchyk 1). As a result, the colonists formed the Stamp Act Congress to protest the act. TEES Paragraphs: Causes/Description/Effects  T  Topic Sentence  Tells the reader exactly what the paragraph is about.  E  Evidence  Evidence comes from your notes.  Evidence must be cited (MLA format).  E  Explain Your Evidence  Explanation should support the evidence; information for your explanation should also come from your notes.  Details! Details! Details!  S  Summary Sentence  Paraphrase the topic sentence or create a bridge to the next paragraph.

Works Cited Page  The Works Cited page should be attached at the end of your paper.  List all sources in alphabetical order by Author’s last name or first significant word in the title if there is no author.  Single space within entries; double space between entries.

Avoiding Plagiarism  Because plagiarism in intellectually dishonest and is therefore a form of stealing, it is an extremely serious offense and can result in severe penalties.  All of these constitute plagiarism: -Failure to document with quotation marks any material copied directly from other sources. -Failure to acknowledge paraphrased or summarized material (someone else’s ideas). -Failure to provide a Works Cited page. -Use of other’s works as one’s owns.  To avoid plagiarism: -Use paraphrase fully or a summary. -Use quotation marks for any significant word(s) you borrow. -Use parenthetical citation to acknowledge the source of quotations and specific information.
