Welcome to the third edition of the Cheshire and Merseyside Healthy Providers Network Newsletter. The network has been in place since summer of The purpose of the network is to provide a collaborative forum for acute trusts and provider trusts to work together on a common theme of improving health and reducing health inequalities. Cheshire & Merseyside Healthy Providers Network are committed to putting health and wellbeing at the heart of every contact with patients, clients, our workforce and the communities we serve. We support provider organisations to aspire to gain World Health Organisation (WHO) and/or Royal Society of Public Health accreditation. Alder Hey Children’s Hospital joined up with Roy Castle FagEnds to launch a special competition for No Smoking Day on Wednesday 12 th March. Children and young people across the hospital, along with local schools, were asked to design a stamp highlighting the dangers of smoking. The response to the campaign was enormous with hundreds of young people sending in their designs. All the entries were judged by the hospital’s Children’s and Young People’s Forum, made up of former and present patients, who chose Alder Hey patient Antonia Gaskin as the winner. Nine year old Antonia’s design pictured the differences between a smoker and non-smoker with the statement, ‘Smoking damages your health and your children’. Antonia’s stamp design was used on over 700 letters sent from the Trust on Wednesday to celebrate No Smoking Day. Liz was joined by Lisa Gill, Service Manager at Roy Castle FagEnds to present Antonia with a special certificate and prize. Members of the network also delivered events for National No Smoking Day. Mersey Care High Secure Services had an information stand at their Maghull site with various resources for staff to check out. They Tweeted information throughout the day. Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital delivered a walkabout to raise awareness for National No Smoking day – they used the opportunity to train staff and also emphasise that E-cigarettes are not to be used in the Trust. This was supported with posters being displayed in all departments. Antonia aged 9 years won the Design a Stamp Competition at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Her winning design is below. For further information on any of the articles above or to join the network please The network members took part in Dry January, the campaign aims to start a new conversation about alcohol. Many people decided to take the challenge and go booze free in January 2014, with over 17,381 people signed up to take part. This campaign enables people to lose weight, feel better, save money and make a healthy start to the new year! The Dry January campaign was led by Liverpool Community Health, Health Promotion Team. They delivered briefing sessions to partners which included resources, leaflets and information to sign people up. Liverpool Community Health alone engaged with over 1200 people through various road show events. Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital delivered a walkabout interactive day with staff and raised awareness of units in alcohol. Over 50 staff pledged to support the campaign and this was advertised on all the hospital computer screens. Mersey Care High Secure Services delivered information on the event in two phases, the first involved thinking about Dry January which took place from 11 th December, the second phase started 1 st January and aimed at getting staff to sign up to the challenge. In total 95 members of staff signed up to the event. An Alcohol workshop was also delivered to Link Nurses cascading information to staff members at ward levels. This training was facilitated by Liverpool Community Health and in total 19 members of staff attended. Alder Hey Children’s hospital raised awareness of the campaign through their Intranet page s and encouraged staff to sign up and get involved. Healthy4Baby.co.uk is a new online tool to provide expectant mum’s with all the information they need to know about healthy diet and exercise during pregnancy. The tool is an opportunity for professionals who have limited time to explore all elements of a healthy pregnancy in detail. You will be provided with resources to give to the expectant mum’s for them to gain further information and get support.
