TORNADOES

DO NOW QUESTION: What factors are essential in the creation of hurricanes? (CRO Format) 2/11/15

WHAT ARE TORNADOS? Define tornado – a rotating funnel-shaped cloud with wind speeds up to 300 mph.

WHAT ARE TORNADOS? They form over land and around low pressure areas. They are funnel shaped. They move counterclockwise. They do not cover a very large area but do severe damage. They form when warm air moves upward in a thunderhead creating an area of low pressure.

HOW A TORNADO FORMS: Warm air moves upward in a thunderhead. A funnel cloud forms when the air starts rotating. The funnel cloud becomes a tornado when it touches the ground.

WHERE DO MOST TORNADOS FORM? Most tornados form in tornado alley.

DO NOW QUESTION: How does a tornado form? CRO Format 2/12/15

HOW ARE STORMS TRACKED? What are three instruments that can be found in a weather station? Weather Vanes Barometers Rain Gauges

HOW ARE STORMS TRACKED? Doppler Radar tracks the speeds and direction of the winds.

HOW ARE STORMS TRACKED These are used to gather data in the upper atmosphere and send data back to the ground station. Weather Balloon

HOW ARE STORMS TRACKED? These are used to take pictures of the atmosphere from space. Weather Satellite

HOW ARE STORMS TRACKED? How do we know the wind speed in a hurricane? Meteorologists fly into hurricanes and drop instruments to collect this data.
