State of the BIM in the Netherlands Two years of BIM QuickScan® benchmark data Léon van Berlo M.Sc.

Introductions… Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

TNO: Netherlands organisation for applied scientific research TNO creates innovations that boost the sustainable competitive strength of industry and well-being of society people Working in 7 themes Biggest research organization in the Netherlands; top 5 in Europe Operating in the ‘gap’ between universities and industry 20% government funded (for new, high level research) 20-30% co-financed projects (for prototyping) 50-60% market research (consultancy) Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

RESEARCH IS ABOUT THE RESULT In everything we do, impact is the key. Our product and process innovations and recommendations are only worth something if our customers can use them to boost their competitiveness. Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Todays topic: BIM QuickScan® Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

How it all started… Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

I’m a building owner and I wanted my project to be designed, engineered and build using BIM (because that would bring me zero costs of failure…. right?). I choose a contractor that said he had 5 years of BIM experience and ordered him to deliver an ‘as build’ BIM model at the end of the project. Now look at what kind of rubbish BIM model he delivered. Could you please look at it and write a report that says this is not a BIM model, but just 3D….?!

Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland I’m a contractor and my client wanted the project to be designed, engineered and build using BIM (I really don’t know why he wanted that…). He also ordered us to deliver an ‘as build’ BIM model at the end of the project which we did. We did a lot of BIM projects and never had any discussions about the quality of the BIM model. Now he is complaining about the model we delivered. Could you please look at it and write a report that says this is a great BIM model….?!

What is BIM? Marketing term Different perspectives Different meaning Layered cake Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

What is BIM? Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

BIM at the moment in the Netherlands…. Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland WHAT IS SEEN WHAT IS HIDDEN

What the industry wanted… Something to define what you mean by ‘BIM’ Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

What we made… Something to visualize the blind spots Something to give insight in your level of BIM competence Something to give insight in your BIM improvement potential Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

What we made: BIM QuickScan ® Online questionnaire 45 multiple choice questions 4 chapters: Organization and Management, Mentality and Culture, Data structures and Workflow, Tools and Technology. 10 aspects (across chapters  resources, standards, education, etc..) Answers go into a TNO developed algorithm that calculates result shown in graphs Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Example questions Is the term “BIM” a part of the vision and strategy of your company? Is it clear what your organization wants to achieve (both long and short term) with the use of BIM? Do you provide for structured (external) training of staff (training)? Where in the process do you use BIM? Are the information flows within your company described? Do you use software tools for revision and version management? Etc… Also: some benchmark questions like ‘what software do you use?’ and ‘what kind of company are you?’ Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Example output result Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

BIM QuickScan ® Gives insight (visualizes) the current BIM status within a company  Gives insight in blind spots for improvement  Does nót say anything about ambition level  The BIM level in this QuickScan is not a sliding scale 2 appearances Self scan Expert scan Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Certified consultants Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Benchmark Between May 2010 and June 2012 Quickscan: 130 scans by 11 certified consultants* Self scans: 682 scans via website Goals of the benchmark To get insight in BIM level in the Netherlands To find R&D topics To learn new stuff we didn’t know yet…. * = since June 2012 almost 100 more scans were done by certified consultants Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Benchmark data reporting Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Lots of result graphs….. Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Conclusion The average BIM level of Dutch companies is quite high. There is a lot of potential in the use of technology and use of tools. Changes in a BIM level is seen over the full with of the scan results. This, again, shows that BIM should be seen as an integrated topic and not a single, standalone development. Lots of disclaimers/reflection: please read the paper (or report if you know Dutch) Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Typical answers Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Is the term “BIM” a part of the vision and strategy of your company?

Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland Do employees like working with BIM? Do they enjoy it?

Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland Are there potential applications for which you could use BIM, but don’t (BIM potential)?

And 90 more of these pie charts…. Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

Some other pictures/conclusions that could be interesting…. Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland

71% likelihood Use of open standards  Defining BIM goal(s)

Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland BIM level per software tool

To round up… A last remark: BIM Quickscan® is about finding the optimal BIM level for your company (not trying to get a high score) It’s for companies that already use BIM (not for starters) New developments: Current QuickScan gives insight of BIM within a company New QuickScan will give insight in projects/teams Internationalization: Seeking partners outside Netherlands Current: Denmark, Australia Léon van Berlo M.Sc. State of the BIM in Holland
