The Greek Gods of Olympus By: Quinn Hasty

Zeus

Hera

Poseidon Poseidon is the king of the seas, and his sacred symbol is the trident. He is the son of Kronos and the brother of Zeus, Hera, and Hades. Poseidon was mostly known for his conflict with Athena over the city of Athens, where Poseidon gave the people a salt water spring, when Athena gave them the first olive tree. Poseidon was a god who had many conflicts with the other gods, and most of them were caused because the gods wanted land. In mythology books, you will rarely find a time when Poseidon is kind and/or cheerful.

Hades Hades is the lord of the dead. He is the king of the Underworld, and his symbols are sculls, diamonds, and his Helm of Darkness, which renders him completely invisible. Hades is most famous for capturing Persephone and making her stay in the Underworld for half of the year.

Aphrodite Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty. She is symbolized by jewelry, flowers, and hearts. Her true love is Ares, god of war. She is most famous for being the most beautiful goddess, (duh) and for being married to the god of the forge, Hephaestus. When wedded to him, Hephaestus went to work on jewelry for her, but that was a big mistake. When Aphrodite put on the jewels, the gods went wild over her.

Ares Ares is the god of war. His sacred symbols are the red boar, and a bloody spear. Ares is most famous for dating Aphrodite and for being caught with her in a net that Hephaestus had made, in a very alarming position.

Hephaestus Hephaestus is the god of the forge and the god of fire. The symbols that represents Hephaestus are a smith’s hammer, an anvil, and a pair of tongs. Hephaestus is the son of Zeus and Hera, and he is most famous for marrying the goddess Aphrodite, and trying to humiliate her when she is with Ares.

Artemis Artemis is the goddess of women, the moon, and hunting. Her symbols are the full moon, a quiver of arrows, and a golden deer. Artemis is most famous for being seen bathing by a mortal man hunter. She turned him into a deer, and his own hunting dogs killed him, thinking he was a regular deer.

Apollo Apollo is the god of the sun, poetry, medicine, archery, and oracles. He is represented by a silver bow, a lyre, (given to him by Hermes,) and a setting sun. He is most famous for killing Python, a dragon which had formerly guarded the palace. By doing that, he earned the Oracle of Delphi. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto, and he is the Artemis’ twin brother.

Hermes Hermes is the god of tricksters, thieves, liars, shepherds, and travelers. Hermes can go to the Underworld to deliver messages to Hades and Persephone, and he can also fly with his magic winged shoes and helmet. Hermes is symbolized by the tortoise, the rooster, the winged shoes, the winged helmet, and the caduceus, which was given to him by Apollo in return for the lyre.
