(1 Tim. 6:20)

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE (1 Tim. 6:20) I. HISTORY A. Dr. Quimby in Portland, Maine (? – 1865) – “mental healer”. B. Mrs. Eddy has a ‘revelation” in 1866 called “Christian Science. Published “Science & Health”. 1. Copyrighted & sold much. 2. Very similar to Quimby’s “Science of Man”.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE (1 Tim. 6:20) I. HISTORY C. First “Christian Science Association” in 1876 D. First “Science Church” in Boston, Also called the “Mother church”. Mrs. Eddy was “pastor”. E. When she died in 1865, she was worth over $3 million.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE II. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT THE BIBLE A. IT HAS BEEN CORRUPTED: “…A mortal material sense stole into the divine record, with its own hue darkening to some extent the inspired pages.” (S&H 139:20-22). B. SOME PARTS ARE LIES: Regarding Gen. 2:7 that God formed man of the dust: “Is it the truth, or is it a lie concerning man and God? It must be a lie…” (S&H 524:25-27).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE II. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT THE BIBLE C. IT DOES NOT CONTAIN ALL REVELATION: ”God has been graciously preparing me during many years for the reception of this final revelation…” (S&H 107:3-5). D. BUT, GOD SAYS HIS WORD IS: 1. Incorruptible (1 Pet. 1:22-25). 2. Inspired & true (2 Tim. 3:16f). 3. Completed In 1 st Century (John 16:13; Jude 3; 2 Pet. 1:3).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE III. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT JESUS A. JESUS CHRIST IS NOT GOD: “…Jesus Christ is not God, as Jesus himself declared, but is the Son of God. This declaration of Jesus, understood, conflicts not at all with another of his sayings: ‘I and my father are one,’ – that is, one in quality, not quantity. As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are on being. The scripture reads: ‘For in Him we live, and move, and have our very being.’ ” (S&H 361:12-20).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE III. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT JESUS B. JESUS IS SEPARATE FROM CHRIST: “…Jesus’ advent in the flesh partook partly of Mary’s earthly condition, although he was endowed with the Christ, the divine Spirit, without measure.” (S&H 30:5-8). “The Christ is incorporeal, spiritual… the corporeal man Jesus was human.” (S&H 332:11-12, 17-18).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE III. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT JESUS C. CHRIST IS IN HEAVEN, NOT JESUS “The invisible Christ was imperceptible to the so called personal senses, whereas Jesus appeared as a bodily existence. This deal personality of the unseen and the seen, the spiritual and the material, the eternal Christ and the corporeal Jesus manifest in flesh, continued until the Master’s ascension, when the human, material concept, or Jesus, disappeared while the spiritual self, or Christ, continues to exist in the eternal order of divine Science…” (S&H 334:10-18).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE III. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT JESUS D. THAT CHRIST DID NOT ACTUALLY DIE: “…They saw him after his crucifixion and learned that he had not died.” (S&H 46:2-3). “Paul writes: ‘ For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the [seeming] death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.’ ” (S&H 45:10-13).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE III. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT JESUS E. THAT JESUS’ BLOOD DOES NOT CLEANSE: “The material blood of Jesus was no more efficacious to cleanse from sin when it was shed upon ‘the accursed tree,’ than when it was flowing in his veins…” (S&H 25:6-9).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE III. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT JESUS F. BUT, GOD SAYS: 1. Jesus Christ IS God (Mt. 1:24; Jn 1:1,14). 2. Jesus IS Christ (1 John 2:22-23). 3. Jesus IS in heaven (Acts 1:11; 2:32; 7:55f, 59; 9:5; Heb. 4:14). 4. Christ DID die (2 John 7; Jn. 19:34; Rom. 5:10; 1 Cor. 15:1). 5. Jesus’ blood DOES cleanse (1 John 1:7; Heb. 10:19-20).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IV. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT SIN & IT’S CONSEQUENCES A. IT IS AN ILLUSION: “Matter and it’s affects – sin, sickness, and death – are states of mortal mind… They are not ideas, but illusions.” (S&H 283:8-11). B. MAN CANNOT SIN: “Man is incapable of sin, sickness, and death.” (S&H 475:28). “Jesus restored Lazarus by understanding that Lazarus had never died, not by an admission that his body had died and then lived again.” (S&H 75:13-15).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IV. WHAT THEY TEACH ABOUT SIN & IT’S CONSEQUENCES C. THE CURE FOR SIN IS TO DENY IT EXISTS: “To get rid of sin through Science, is to divest sin of any supposed mind or reality… You conquer error by denying its verity.” (S&H 339:28-32). D. BUT, GOD SAYS: 1. It is real (1 Tim. 4:7-8; Jn. 8:34; 1 Jn. 3:4). 2. One who denies - lacks truth (1 Jn. 1:8). 3. To cure – must confess (1 Jn. 1:9-10).

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CONLCUSION: A. Began in the 1800’s, not in the first century. C. Is a work of Satan. B. Blasphemes the Word of God, Jesus Christ, and denies sin… “ Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto The knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim. 2:4)
