People learn not by what the teacher does, but by what the teacher gets them to do.

Psychological Laws of Learning Law of Effect Law of Association Law of Practice

Definition: We learn from what we do or practice; continued practice is necessary for retention of the learning.  Practice implies performance; not simply repetition  Practice is essential  Knowledge that is not used is lost  Practice involves improvement

Law of Effect Definition Satisfyingness of the practice,or it’s results, promotes learning as it makes for intensity of experience or encourages further practice. Annoyingness of the practice, or its results, may promote learning as it makes for intensity of experience or causes better responses to be made instead of less appropriate ones.

Law of Effect continues..  Deals with effect outcome, consequence on learners  Rewards or punishments  Means that satisfyingness promotes learning in 2 ways: by making for intensity of experience, and by encouraging further practice or response  Conversely, annoying things may also promote learning through intensity, it may also aid the learner to try a more appropriate response which may be successful, BUT, it may also deter further practice.  This law was the forerunner to the concept of reinforcement.

Law of Association Definition Experiences which occur together tend to recur together.  Certain situations create certain behaviors  Occurring together may mean simultaneous or sequential.  Easy to see in manual skills  Association of learning to other events.

What are the principles of learning?

We learn more and better when…  There is interest.  Needs are being satisfied.  Thinking is stimulated.  There is active participation.  Two or more senses are used.  A favorable climate of success is maintained.
