Starter activity With your partner, discuss: What a dictionary is Two types of dictionary Three reasons why you might use a dictionary You have 3 minutes!

The importance of the dictionary! Ziel: To learn how to use a dictionary.

Different types of dictionary An English dictionary An English to German & a German to English dictionary

Why do we use a dictionary? To look up the meaning of words we do not know, e.g. establishment. You would use an English dictionary for this. To look up German (or French!) words in a text which we do not already know to find out what they mean in English. To look up English words in a text which we do not know how to say in German, so that we can use them in our work. To check the spelling of words we already know. To learn new words by ourselves so that Miss. Clarke doesn ’ t have to tell us everything!!

German to English/English to German dictionaries These dictionaries are the ones we use most often in our German lessons. The first half of the dictionary is the German half. The words are in German first. When would we use this half? That ’ s right: to find out the meaning of a GERMAN word which we do not know. Task: Look up the word ‘ Feder ’. What does it mean? (1 merit mark to the first person to find it and tell me the meaning and what other information it gives!!)

What does it say? Feder f n feather the German word the gender: in this case, die. It might say m (der) or n (das) or pl (die) the English word the word type: in this case, ‘ n ’ stands for ‘ noun ’. It might say a, which would be adjective or v, which would be a verb

Task: In your group, look up the word from German into English. Nominate ONE person from your team to get up and find the word hidden in the room. First team to find it and take it back to their group wins a point – NO RUNNING! Baum Fahne Tisch Stuhl essen Kopf Fernseher sonnig schön Schule tree flag table chair to eat head TV sunny beautiful school

The second half of the dictionary The second half of the dictionary is the English half. The words are in English first. When would we use this half? That ’ s right: to find out how to say a word in German which we do not know. Task: Look up the word ‘ foot ’. How do we say it in German? (1 merit mark to the first person to find it and tell me the meaning and what other information it gives!!)

What does it say? foot n Fuß m the English word the gender: in this case, der. It might say f (die) or n (das) or pl (die) the German word the word type: in this case, ‘ n ’ stands for ‘ noun ’. It might say a, which would be adjective or v, which would be a verb

Task: Find the German word and write it on your whiteboard. When you have done it and spelled it correctly, hold up your whiteboard – first 5 people to do so will get a point each. How many points can you get? garden bed computer football lamp cinema guitar bathroom to dance mirror Garten Bett Computer Fußball Lampe Kino Gitarre Badezimmer tanzen Spiegel
