Good Health Includes Wellness World Health Organization (WHO) states that health includes wellness and it is more than just being sick or not. Wellness- a state of being that enables a person to reach his or her highest potential Wellness also includes - having a good quality of life good sense of well-being positive outlook on life being happy and fulfilled

Total Health and Wellness Chain Represents different components of health and wellness For a chain to be strong, each link must be strong Since there are many components, it’s important not to focus on just one The GOAL of health and wellness, is to promote the positive while avoiding the negative of each component.

Illness Treatment to Health and Wellness Promotion A person born today is expected to have a lifespan of appox. 75 years….WHY??? Medical Science Prior to 1900, people were not expected to live long because of killer diseases such as smallpox and polio. There were no vaccines or antibiotics available then, like there are today. The focus of medical science has shifted from the treatment of disease to prevention of disease and promotion of wellness.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services developed goals called Healthy People These goals focus on developing health for all by ensure all people get treatment for illness disease prevention and wellness promotion live healthy, happy, and productive lives The main focus of the Healthy People 2010 goals is to promote wellness and prevent unnecessary diseases and disability.

Wellness For All Anyone can achieve health and wellness, even if they are being treated for a disease. For example, a person living with diabetes since birth can live a relatively normal life with treatment by practicing healthy lifestyles.

Healthy Lifestyles and Risk Factors Lifestyle- a healthy way of living that helps you prevent illness and enhance wellness. A risk factor is anything that increases a person’s chance of a health problem occurring. Controllable Risk Factor- risk factors that you can act upon to change For example: healthy lifestyles are in your control…eating habits and exercise

Four Major Factors that Contribute to early Death: Unhealthy Lifestyle 58.5% Environment 21.8% Human Biology 16.4% Healthcare System 9.8%

If people would change the way they lived, then early death can be prevented. Non-controllable Risk Factors- risk factors that are not in your control…age and gender but people can still achieve good health and wellness. It’s best to focus on the risk factors that you can control to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Choosing Healthy Lifestyles BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE: The most important change Americans can do to improve their health and wellness would be to become physically active. EAT PROPERLY: Changing eating habits to improve nutrition. MANAGE STRESS: Stress effects everyone… learn how to deal with it!!! ADOPT GOOD PERSONAL HEALTH HABITS: Good health habits can prevent illness…such as brushing teeth, washing hands, and getting enough sleep. AVOID DESTRUCTIVE HABITS: Tobacco, alcohol, and drugs can reduce the quality of life. ADOPT GOOD SAFTEY PRACTICES: Health goal is to reduce the amount of injuries and deaths from accidents. A good safety habit is to wear your seat belt. SEEK AND FOLLOW APPROPRIATE MEDICAL ADVICE: Regular medical and dental check-ups are recommended to help prevent problems before they start

The Environment and Wellness An environment can be unhealthy if it causes health problems or takes away from the five components of wellness. Physical Environment – air, land, water, plants, and other physical things. Social Environment- social interaction with people around you.
