Exhibit plans for CDF/DZero/Tevatron Kurt Riesselmann Director’s Review Sept. 15, 2011

The many faces of Fermilab that we like to show - Science - Technology - People - Int’l collaboration - Prairies, woods & wildlife

Post-Tevatron opportunities Give more visitors up close and personal tours of the tools we use to perform our work. Tell an in-depth story about the research at the premier U.S. High Energy Physics Lab. 3

General overview: Existing Fermilab Visitor Tour Program Goals of the current Fermilab visitor program Allow visitors to gain appreciation for Fermilab science and technology and the importance of particle physics research Show as much behind-the-scenes science as possible, to convey  the type of work done by the Fermilab workforce  the scale and complexity of instruments/experiments  the international make up of HEP collaborations Give visitors the opportunity to meet members of the technical staff About 20 VIP tours per year (small groups, often go to CDF/DZero) About 12,000 participants in physics tours per year  Split evenly between K-12 students & adults  Size varies from 120 middle school students to groups of college students or adults; very few can go to CDF/DZero right now  Docents divide large groups into smaller groups of 20 New CDF/DZero tours will be a subset of the full visitor experience. 4

Objectives for new tour areas at CDF + DZero Scheduled, guided tours, led by trained docents Provide tours that accommodate groups of various sizes (school bus has up to 60 students for a tour)  Break large groups into smaller groups Use existing/create new meeting rooms at CDF/DZero for orientation as well as discussions with a scientist Preserve work spaces and their working atmosphere Develop story line and points of interest:  Control rooms: analysis & discovery  Collision halls/detector: detector technology  Tevatron: accelerator technology  Exhibit areas: artifacts & future research program CDF and DZero offer complementary opportunities  CDF: detector + Tevatron tunnel + IARC  DZero: detector + LAr R&D activities + Project X 5

Plan FY2012: Develop basic tour program with the resources available ($50k in M&S)  Use limited in-house manpower and resources  Develop complementary tour concepts for CDF and DZero  Use as much of the existing exhibit materials as possible Create new posters, videos and other materials within budget  Offer basic tours as soon as spaces are secured and ready (~ 1 year from now; VIP tours can happen sooner as needed) Start slow, gain experience, increase frequency of tours with time Understand what visitors like, don’t like FY2013: Build out: improve exhibits and expand program  Contract with exhibit company if funding is available in FY2013  Build out the points of interest with more/better exhibits  Develop materials for evolving research program 7

CDF Exhibit team has identified the route that tours will take  Have had an external safety review and know what work needs to be done to create a safe environment for tours  Have received input from exhibit professionals  Exhibit budget in FY2012 ($50k) gets things started, but more money is required in FY2013 to build out exhibit (Estimated cost by consultant: $700k) and for maintenance in following years Scope of work for FY2012 is well understood to prepare CDF for the first tours in summer of 2012 with basic exhibit area  Secure & Stabilize  Make Life Safety improvements  Develop detailed story line  Create some new materials that support story line (such as posters, exhibits, video clips, animations, etc)  Tours need to highlight IARC and accelerator work 8

CDF/ DZero Life Safety/Display Work List Work lists and initial cost estimates generated in June 2011 (based on a walk through of area), partial lists shown Final life safety work list was compiled after consultation with Fire Safety consultant 15

In FY2012, CDF team plans to tackle the following items related to developing the tour areas:  Manage and implement life safety improvements  Pull the detector apart  Add protective plastic covers where needed  Install platform to look inside detector  Add safety lighting (exhibit-style lighting in FY2013?)  Place existing exhibit items in collision hall  Preserve screens in control room as videos  Reconfigure computers and screens to play back screen captures  Remove some electronics from trigger room  Even if hard hats are no longer a safety requirement, consider the installation of a rack with 35 hard hats and require tour participants to wear them for the special “real science” feeling 16

Tevatron team will help with: Making life safety improvements in Tevatron tour area Relocate/install gates to prohibit people from entering unauthorized areas Education Office/Office of Communication plans to do: Carry out needs assessment with teachers and docents Develop detailed tour plan Record sound and video of people working in CDF control room Take photos of scientists, engineers, technicians, etc for posters Take photos of CDF electronic racks for life-size printing Design and print posters Create signage for artifacts & exhibits Consider installation of loudspeakers and motion sensors for background audio sound to recreate working atmosphere Consider development of touch screens to display collision events and plots for both experiments 17

Preliminary plan for poster themes: Design and print a set of posters that addresses five themes:  Questions and ideas (for display in meeting room)  Instruments: accelerators (for display in Tevatron tunnel)  Instruments: detectors (for display in collision hall)  Data and analysis (for display in trigger room)  Discoveries and new ideas  Current and future experiments 18

DZero Have identified potential route that tours would take  Conducted preliminary, internal safety review, which identified only few life safety work items  Received input from exhibit professionals  Exhibit work is part of budget allocated for DZero decommissioning Scope of work for FY2012 to prepare DZero for the first tours in summer of 2012 with basic exhibit area is largely understood  Finish cosmic-ray run in Dec  Secure & Stabilize  Make Life Safety improvements; create meeting room  Move existing exhibit items to future exhibit areas  Develop detailed story line and create extra materials that support story line (posters, exhibits, video, etc)  Story line will connect to LAr activities and Project X research 19

In FY2012, DZero team plans to tackle the following items related to developing the tour areas:  Manage and implement life safety improvements  Create meeting room for about 25 people  Remove most of shielding wall  Place existing exhibit items in room next to control room  Preserve screens in control room as videos  Perhaps install platform for VIPs and select tour groups to look inside detector Education Office/Office of Communication plans to do: Carry out needs assessment with teachers and docents Develop detailed tour plan Take photos of scientists, engineers, technicians, etc for posters Create signage for artifacts & exhibits 24

Summary Have identified the tour routes and exhibit areas at CDF and DZero Life safety issues are well understood and will be addressed to prepare for tours Exhibit team will gather input from scientists, teachers and tour participants on how to optimize tours/exhibits $50k for CDF exhibits in FY12 is a start Allows us to create some displays, posters, etc Will need additional funding in FY13 to build out exhibits 25
