11) SKETCH a side view of TERRACE FARMING
12) WHY is TERRACE FARMING so important in the ANDES MOUNTAINS?
13) SLASH & BURN AGRICULTURE 1.Slash (cut down all vegetation) 2.Dry 3.Burn 4.Plant Crops
14) SLASH & BURN AGRICULTURE + Inexpensive Gets rid of unwanted vegetation quickly In the SHORT TERM, it releases nutrients into soil – helps things grow - Releases Air Pollution and Carbon into Atmosphere Fewer Trees = Less Oxygen Reduced Biodiversity Causes Land to Lose its Fertility Land only farmed for 2-3 years
15) SLASH & BURN AGRICULTURE Deforestation Potential Loss of Medicines Soil Erosion Cycle of Poverty Decreased Species Habitat

1)EMERGENTS - the tops of the tallest trees, which are much higher than the average trees (the canopy). 2) CANOPY - the upper parts of most of the trees (about 65 to 130 feet or 20 to 40 m tall). This leafy environment is full of life: insects, arachnids, many birds, some mammals, etc. 3) UNDERSTORY - a dark, cool environment that is under the leaves but over the ground. Most of the understory of a rainforest has so little light that plant growth is limited. There are short, leafy, mostly non-flowering shrubs, small trees, ferns, and vines (lianas) that have adapted to filtered light and poor soil. 4) FOREST FLOOR - the ground - it is teeming with animal life, especially insects and arachnids, plus large animals (like anacondas and jaguars). 1) 2) 3) 4)
