METRIC SYSTEM WRITE DOWN RED NOTES

WHAT IS THE METRIC SYSTEM  Metric system is based on 10  1 x 10 = 10  10 x 10 = 100  110 x 10 = 1000  United states system isn’t really based on anything. Yards, feet, inch, MILE (4 letter words) etc.

METRIC SYSTEM  It DOES NOT Involve fractions really…. 1/10 equals.10  U.S. is only 1 of 3 countries in the world that does not use the metric system  Numbers don’t change….. You are only really moving the decimal.

LENGTH  Length is the distance from one point to another.  We measure length in (M)……METERS!  We use a meter stick

MASS  The measure of amount of matter that an object contains

WEIGHT (kg) Kilograms  The measure of the FORCE OF GRAVITY acting on an object.  Weight can change depending on the force of gravity.  Mass will always be constant.  EXAMPLE: On the moon you would have less weight because there is less gravity then on earth. Your mass will stay the same.

IMPORTANT USEAGE  MASS……..we use GRAM(kilogram, milligram, etc)  LENGTH….. We use METER (kilometer, centimeter, millimeter)  WEIGHT…….. We use KILOGRAM

MNEMOIC:  King Henry Died Unexpectedly Drinking Chocolate Milk.

TO CONVERT from one metric unit to another  DRAW a horizontal line  Draw 7 vertical hash marks. Make the middle hash a little longer.

Above each line. Write the letters of your mnemonic (king henry died unexpectedly drinking chocolate milk  K H D u d c m  M  L  G

What do the letters stand for?  M – abbreviation for meter  Meter is standard measurement for length (little longer then yard)  L is the abbreviation for liter  Liter is the standard measurement for volume.  G – abbreviation for gram.  Gram weighs about as much as paper clip, 5 grams is how much a nickel weighs.  BUT Kilogram is the standard measurement for mass (not weight)

 Kilo is 1,000  Hecto is 100  Deca is 10  U is unit  Deci is 1/10 or 0.1  Centi is 1/100 or 0.01 (1 cent is 1/100 of dollar)  Milli is 1/1000  HINT – all the small ones end in I (think mini)

Continue filling out your slider  k h d u d c m  km hm dam M dm cm mm  kL hL daL L dL cL mL  kg hg dag G dg cg mg

How to use the slider  1. Show the decimal. Add extra zeros  If decimal is not showing add it. Whole number decimal to right  2. Look at the unit for the known quanity in your problem. On the metric slider put your pointer on THAT unit.  3. Move to new unit, counting both number of jumps and direction of the jumps.  4. move decimal in original number the same # of spaces and in the same direction

How many mm are in 57 cm?  1. write 57  2. show the decimal 57.  3. add extra zeroes  4. use your slider and put the pointer on the starting unit.  5. count jumps, and notice direction of jumps needed to get to goal unit.

 57 cm = ________________ mm  57.    Move on slider   What is your answer?  57cm = 570 mm

 L = ______________ kL  What are you going to do first to solve this problem?  Use your slider to find the answer.  Remember the L is under U for units.  You move 3 to the left.  What is your answer?  L = Kl

 7250 cL = ________________ kL  Move the decimal in the original number the same number of spaces and in the same direction as you move the decimal with the slider.  Five jumps to the left!  Move decimal to the left five jumps.  Add two zeros as place holders.  Answer is ???  cL = kL

Solve this g = _________mg Three jumps to the right!!! g = 45,000,000 mg

 DO THESE ON YOUR OWN.  35 mm = __________ cm  14,443 L = __________ kL  kg = __________ g  35.4 L = __________ mL  16 mm = ________ km
