ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: Students will learn about the functions of the three branches of government. Students will utilize resources to teach their peers about the three branches of government. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will display their knowledge on the three branches of government through a “mini lesson” for their peers. Process/Skills: Students will research the three branches of government using a variety of sources (the internet, textbooks, etc.) Values/Dispositions: Students will discuss the three branches of government and determine how any particular branch can be seen as “abusing” their powers.
ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: The three branches of government are the building blocks of the United States. Without any one of them, powers wouldn’t be balanced and citizens would not know how to act. All students living in the U.S. should know the functions of each branch and their own role and importance in government. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 14.B.2 Explain what government does at local, state and national levels. National – NCSS Themes Theme 6: Power, Authority, and Governance
Logical/Mathematical
Logical/Mathematical Students will research information about the the three branches of government. They will first rea their textbook, then use the internet to find additional information and facts. Resources: Computer Access with WIFI Social Studies textbook (provided by school)
Verbal/Linguistic
Verbal/Linguistic Students will present their findings to their peers and the teacher. They will discuss the particular branch assigned to them, focusing primarily on – what it is, the function, the importance, and key members. Resources: Space for presentation Computer Access with WIFI PowerPoint presentations Any additional presentation materials
Musical/Rhythmic
Musical/Rhythmic Students will be engaged with a short YouTube video that introduces who “has the powers” in the three branches of government. Resources: Computer Access with WIFI YouTube link: 8 A presentation screen to show the clip
Visual/Spatial
Visual/Spatial When presenting their information, students will be required to utilize at least one visual – this can include but is not limited to, posters, diagrams, PowerPoint presentations, etc. Resources: Computer Access with WIFI Microsoft Programs – Word, PowerPoint Access to Computer Printer Poster board, Construction paper Markers, Colored Pencils, Crayons Glue, Scissors
Body/Kinesthetic
Body/Kinesthetic Students will present the information while standing in front of their peers. While they are not required, they can move around freely throughout the classroom as they please. Resources: Space for presentation
Interpersonal
Interpersonal Students will work with a group of peers. Because there are three branches of government, students will be divided in three groups and then each group will further be divided into two groups. (two groups will each teach about one branch of government) Resources: Space to work in groups Computer Access with WIFI Textbooks
Intrapersonal
Intrapersonal Students will first work alone to find their own information. They will spend 30 – 45 minutes reading their textbook and utilizing the internet before meeting with their groups. Resources: Space for students to work individually Computer Access with WIFI Textbooks
Naturalistic
Naturalistic Students will have the opportunity to talk to a representative from different branches of government (depending on who’s willing to visit the classroom) to ask questions about their role and what they do. Resources: Space for visitors in the classroom Willing visitors to come in and participate

They will be assessed on the resources utilized and quality of presentation. They must present information on what their branch is, its function and importance, and key members.
