*two page notebook format*  Do Now:  1) What would you do if you had to put a lot of clothes into a small suitcase?  2) If you were sharing the suitcase with your twin brother or sister, what would you need to do?  Topic: Cell Growth and Division  Objectives, language objectives:  Describe the structure of a chromosome.  Follow chromosomes through the processes of mitosis and cytokinesis.  Lang. Obj. Differentiate between DNA vocabulary: chromosome, histone, chromatin, chromatid, centromere, telomere; and mitosis phase vocabulary: pro phas e, meta phase, ana phase, and telo phase. Match vocab to images.  Page 49  Tuesday, Dec 9, 2014 Page 50

What would you do if you had to put a lot of clothes into a small suitcase?

If you were sharing the suitcase with your twin brother or sister, what would you need to do?

Chromosomes condense at the start of mitosis.  During the Gap (G1) stage of the cell cycle, DNA is loose and piled up like spaghetti.  DNA is spread out because the cell needs to use DNA to make proteins.  In order for cells to divide, they need neat, compact packages of DNA that can be split easily into two different nuclei.  Study Figure 2.2 on page 131. (you don’t have to write all this down.) Discuss with your table partner, “How does a giant string of DNA end up packed into a small package?”

Walther Flemming, 1882  Revolutionary staining and enhanced microscope technology

What did Flemming see? Compare Flemming’s pictures to figure 2.4 – The Cell Cycle in Detail. What was he seeing? Label the images in the handout with the stage of the Cell Cycle you feel are the best match. What evidence can you cite for your selections?

5.2 Formative Assessment  Answer questions 1-5 on page 134.  Answer Study Guide questions on page 43 in class using the Big Black Book.  SUMMARIZE what you learned today in 3-5 sentences  Homework:  Study Guide 5.2  Review Greek and Latin word roots  Make up take home quiz if not taken in class
