Sonnets

Sonnet 98 From you have I been absent in the spring, When proud-pied April dress'd in all his trim Hath put a spirit of youth in every thing That heavy Saturn laugh'd and leap'd with him. Yet nor the lays of birds nor the sweet smell Of different flowers in odor and in hue Could make me any summer's story tell. Or from their proud lap pluck them while they grew; Nor did I wonder at the lily's white, Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose; These were but sweet, but figures of delight; Drawn after you, you pattern of all those. Yet seem'd it winter still, and, you away, As with your shadow I with these did play.

Sonnet 154 The little Love-god lying once asleep Laid by his side his heart-inflaming brand, Whilst many nymphs that vow'd chaste life to keep Came tripping by; but in her maiden hand The fairest votary took up that fire Which many legions of true hearts had warm'd; And so the Generall of hot desire Was sleeping by a virgin hand disarm'd. This brand she quenched in a cool well by, Which from Love's fire took heat perpetual, Growing a bath and healthful remedy For men diseased; but I, my mistress' thrall Came there for cure, and this by that I prove, Love's fire heats water, water cools not love.
