RDA Training at EAL: Session 9-- Reproductions: microfilms, reprints, etc. Charlene Chou May 13 th,

Agenda Homework discussion Reproductions – RDA rules and guidelines – Case studies (with current RDA/LC-PCC PS) Microform (from print) Reprint (facsimile) Reproduction is a compilation Note: the examples of reprint serials and e-serials covered in the serial session; e-books in the monograph session; digital still images in the Still image session – Updates: PCC TG on Cataloging Microform Reproductions – Discussion Remaining issues – Other formats – LC-PCC PS for RDA 0.0 2

LC-PCC PS definition LC-PCC PS for Related manifestation is a core element for LC for reproductions.27.1 The word “reproduction” is being used in its broadest sense to include all resources formerly identified as reproductions, republications, reprints, reissues, facsimiles, etc., that still represent equivalent content between an original resource and a reproduction of that original. Revised editions represent different expressions and are not treated as reproductions. 3

LC-PCC PS for RDA — Referencing related manifestations Same carrier (775 field) – Reprint Different carrier (776 field) – Microform (from print) – Online serials (from print) Exceptions: – Reproduction is a compilation – Reproduction: a facsimile of a manuscript 4

Appendix J.4—Relationship Designators for Related Manifestations J.4.2 (Equivalent Manifestation Relationships) – electronic reproduction of (manifestation) An analog manifestation used as the basis for an electronic reproduction. Reciprocal relationship: electronic reproduction – facsimile of (manifestation) A manifestation used as the basis for an exact reproduction. Reciprocal relationship: facsimile 5

Reprint of reprint, part 2 10

Exceptions If the manifestation is a compilation containing reproductions of works not published earlier as a compilation, give a bibliographic history note, rather than MARC 775/ 776 linking fields, about the individual works if you think that information would be helpful to the user If the reproduction is a facsimile of a manuscript and attributes of the original for use in a MARC 775/ 776 linking field are not readily ascertainable, give a bibliographic history note with the information you have

Microfilm: filmed-with as a compilation 12

Discussion 775/776 vs. 533 Born digital vs. digitalized resources – Digitalized resources RDA—manifestation-specific vs. Provider Neutral Record guidelines New MARC code: 340 (physical medium) – Example 340 $o negative Flowchart: decision process 13

PCC Task Group On RDA Microform Reproductions The issue was raised in OpCo Meeting in 2013 – TG was established in June 2013 – Preliminary report due in October 2013 – Final report due on April 15 th, 2014 – PCC Joint Operations Committee Meeting on May 8, 2014 at LC: approved TG report and SCS response RDA Microform Reproductions Cataloging – Task Group Report (Word, 58 pages, 963 KB) Task Group Report – SCS Response to the Task Group Report (Word, 37 KB) SCS Response to the Task Group Report – Abstract (Word, 27 KB) Abstract 15

PCC Task Group On RDA Microform Reproductions Recommendations from the PCC Standards Committee (SCS) – While RDA is optimized for a post-MARC environment, we remain in a MARC environment for the time being – The overwhelming majority of existing bibliographic records for microform reproductions contain bibliographic descriptions based on the original publication rather than the reproduction. – Analysis in OCLC WorldCat shows that fewer and fewer new bibliographic records are being created for microform reproductions. – Given a choice between bibliographic details relating to the original publication and those relating to the reproduction, most systems are designed to allow users to refine their search arguments using just one approach, and the status quo seems preferable given legacy records and practices. – Because AACR2 LCRI 11 allows the bibliographic descriptions of microform reproductions based on existing bibliographic records, bibliographic records for microform reproductions can currently be created using staff with less cataloging expertise than would be needed to apply the corresponding RDA instructions 16

PCC Task Group On RDA Microform Reproductions PCC Coding – Records for microform reproductions are coded as “pcc” in the MARC 042 field and “rda” in the MARC 040 field if they adhere to RDA instructions specifying a treatment for “Facsimiles and Reproductions” ( ), with the exceptions. Authorized Access Points (AAP) – All authorized access points are supported by NACO authority records: Newly-created authority records must be RDA; authority records which already exist need not be upgraded to RDA unless they have the MARC 667 field indicating further work is needed. Content, Media and Carrier information – Regardless of the cataloging rules of the source record, use MARC fields Do not use MARC 245 subfield “h” 17

PCC Task Group On RDA Microform Reproductions MARC 533 field for related reproduction data – Format of reproduction – Dates of publication and/or sequential designation of issues reproduced (for serials) – Place and name of the agency responsible for the reproduction – Date of the reproduction – Physical description of the reproduction if different from the original – Series statement of the reproduction (if applicable) – Notes relating to the reproduction (if applicable) Related manifestations – In the MARC 776 field subfield “i” use either Reproduction of (manifestation): or $i Print version: It is CONSER practice to use the latter in the 776 field. Comprehensive records – If the cataloger has a resource consisting of multiple monographs or serials title on the same reels(s)/fiche, they may catalog the comprehensive record as a new record using RDA. Within the reel(s)/fiche, individual analytics may be cataloged using the “status quo” procedures outlined above 18
