TASK 7

Active Spectatorship Active spectatorship is ways that an audience can demonstrate their likes or dislikes of a particular film. This could be through reviews, blog posts, comments on trailers, anything as long as it demonstrates a like or dislike. For the Princess Diaries franchise, the fans have shown their interests in different kinds of ways for example: Quizzes about the movie – I found that fans were making a number of quizzes for the movie to see who knows it best! Fan Reviews – I found a site that had a number of good and bad reviews, all people expressing their likes and dislikes over the franchise at Rotten Tomatoe. Blog Posts – I found this of a fan describing their crush on a character from the film, these are quiet common amongst fans. moscovitz-of-the-princess-diaries-series/ moscovitz-of-the-princess-diaries-series/

Audience Pleasure e.g positive benefits audiences feel about watching the films Audience Pleasure is the benefits from the film that the audience get such as going to events where they can demonstrate their love for the films and the benefits it includes. For my particular franchise their have been a few beneficial aspects that have come from the film: YouTube Fan Videos: Fan Clubs: Fan Blogs:

Frameworks of Interpretation e.g different audiences ‘interpret’ the films in different ways Frameworks of Interpretation just means that every individual who watches a film interprets the film in different ways where some would love the film, you will have some who will hate the film just the same and each opinion often likes to be aired. For my franchise there are lots of different interpretations of the movie from different types of audiences: Rotten Tomatoes Critics: = =

Media literacy e.g the knowledge and skills the audience have in ‘interpreting’ the films Media literacy is film critics that back up their information with trained and literate knowledge to show that they are professionals in critiquing a piece of work or film and the contrast being those who have not got the knowledge of the right language to critique or elaborate on their comments. For this franchise there have been a huge contrast of Media literate and illiterate people: Amazon UK Customer Review Empire Review Media Literate Media Illiterate (Non- Professional)

Intertexuality e.g the connections and references the film make to other films Intertexuality is when a movie makes reference to another movie or other movies within their own franchise and make connections with them to the new movie. For example in my franchise The Princess Diaries: Mia says ‘Shut Up’ to the Queen in the first movie when finding out she’s a princess and the Queen says ‘Shut Up’ in the same way in the second movie when finding out Mia has to marry to be Queen. In both movies, Princess Mia receives a makeover from the same guy and again he uses before and after images to reveal her image

P referred Readings (Reception Theory) e.g audiences responding to the film in a dominant, negotiated or oppositional way Dominant Negotiated Oppositional These reviews from both a professional site and a casual public review from Amazon show a dominance over the film giving them 4 and 5 star ratings showing their likings for the film in a dominant way. These are reviews that show opposition against the film. They show a dislike compared to the more dominant ones. They are one star which is definitely showing oppositional views against the film. These reviews are neither for or against the film. They are in the middle. They are negotiated between the two being three stars. They show negotiation.

Audience Effects e.g ways the films make audiences behave differently Audience Effects are when you go to see a film and you come out with the film having an avid effect on you. As an example, if you go to see a violent film, you would come out feeling violent and the film could also make you act violently. It causes copy-cat crimes because of these movies. This is not really appropriate for my chosen film but as an example for other films: In 2012, there was a shooting in Aurora, Colorado during a midnight screening of 'The Dark Knight Rises' it killed 12 people and injured over seventy. It could be said that the violence of the film is what triggered the shooting and is what triggered the young man off his hinges as he was watching the movie too. Back in 2011, the Ben Affleck movie, ''The Town'' inspired 62 robberies all using techniques demonstrated within the film to carry out their crimes. This is also seen as copy-cat crimes. These movies have inspired these people to become criminals/violent Bleach-DNA-Movie-The-Town-Ben-Affleck htmlhttp:// Bleach-DNA-Movie-The-Town-Ben-Affleck html

Fandom e.g the audience who love the film and demonstrate certain behaviours as fans This just means people demonstrate their love for the film by creating fan bases and supporting the film in more dominant ways. For example: Fanpop Pages: This is a fansite with over 6,290 members for the first movie alone. It's where they can share quizzes, photos,GIFS, videos and forums on just this particular movie. Fanfiction: This is where fans write their own interpretations of what they dream of happening next, or in the past, or even rewriting it all together to fit their dreams and fantasies. Fan Montages: This is where fans take a certain song be it romantic or what and make it fit a character or certain characters. Like if they dream of two being together they edit clips of them together to make a fantasy romance.

Social Networking e.g the importance of ‘spreading the word’ online This just means that promotion through media and social networking sites and how they can be important campaigns for movies such as movie Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts to promote the movie and gain followers from it. Princess Diaries was released in early 2000's before the internet became really popular or social networking platforms were invented. Though they still do have an official Facebook page with an avid like count of: 500, They still have posts even up to 2015 which keeps the movies name out there and relative to everyone, creating the need for people to buy it and download it. I can see how these days it is very important to use social media to the advantage as everyone is on there and everyone gets to see it. It reaches people much easier than TV and Radio.

Pre and Post Viewing Experiences e.g what audiences may do before or after watching the film Pre-book Cinema tickets: Tickets go on sale months before the film even goes out and so people may prebook tickets to see the movie after watching a trailer. Read the books: The Princess Diaries was originally a book series and so people who would want to watch my franchise could also read the book to get an idea of what it's all about. Pre-order DVD: After someone has watched a film, if they really enjoyed it they may want to keep the film and so may preorder of iTunes or Amazon for when it is released on DVD. Leave a review: After watching the movie someone may want to share their opinions positive and negative with everyone else and so may leave a review on the cinema site or Facebook page or Amazon for others to read. Also, may read reviews before going to see the movie.

Conditions of Reception e.g in what environment did the viewing take place Cinema: The first chance for the public to see the movie is in the cinema, this can impact a persons opinion on the movie because it is usually the first time they are seeing it and so is definitely a base for most peoples opinions when they watch a movie for the first time. Home DVD: At home on DVD or Netflix, the fact that if a physical copy of something is bought then you have probably seen the movie before and like it. So being at home probably impacts on whether the movie is liked due to the fact that it has been purchased. Though, many people can rent the movie now to watch at home and so being home could definitely bring out the opinions.
