Today’s Goal Today’s goal is to help you to understand academic research appointments at the proposal stage and during the award. 2

Points to remember for all research titles: Timely effort changes: e.g., short code changes and split funding Additional pay (pay that does not generate effort) can’t be on grants without SPO permission. Exception: Research fellows on a training grant or sponsored from an outside source with 0% effort require PAR. Funding ending: Alert your PI and HR 30 to 60 days prior to end date. Termination: Effort certification required eVerify Sick and Vacation time tracking Temp benefits Effort Cost sharing Salary caps Work Connections 3

Post Doc/Research Fellow - We expect to be 100% effort CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -Research Fellows are meant to be in training. Fellows will be under the mentorship of an instructional or primary research scientist (SPG201.19). This supplemental position is eligible for some fringe benefits. See benefits website. PI on Grants? No TEACHING ALLOWED? No APPOINTMENT PERIOD: Annual - renewable up to three years. Renewal after three years requires a letter to the DivAD stating reason for extension and requesting the extension. Expectation is that this fourth year would be terminal year in this title. College EC REVIEW? No Posted? No Vacation/time card/sick time: Yes vacation, but doesn't carry over years. Must use in one year or loose it. No time card required so must be approved/tracked by PI or dept administrator. Three weeks of sick time for effort appt. Vacation is four weeks. Medical Benefits? If sponsor does not pay benefits department is responsible to cover them. Reimbursement to department can be requested of college. 4

Post Doc-Research Fellow/Training Grant - Post Docs on a training grant or if the postdoc is paid directly from outside UM they can have a ZERO % appointment. CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -If candidates are on a training grant they receive a stipend--not effort generating. PI on Grants? No TEACHING ALLOWED? No APPOINTMENT PERIOD: Annual - renewable up to three years College EC REVIEW? No Posted? No Vacation/time card/sick time: No Medical Benefits? Visiting Research Investigator CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -Use for future post-doc while waiting for Ph.d. PI on Grants? No TEACHING ALLOWED? No APPOINTMENT PERIOD: One year maximum College EC REVIEW? No Posted? No Vacation/time card/sick time: No Medical Benefits? Yes, if at least four months in duration at 50% or greater. Check benefits website. 6

Research Investigator CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -In general, junior research faculty will be appointed at the level of Assistant Research Scientist. In rare cases, appointments may be made at the Research Investigator rank. However, in LSA the Research Investigator rank is limited to candidates who, while meeting all other requirements, have not yet completed their Ph.D. Once a Research Investigator has had the Ph.D. degree conferred and documentation is provided to the College, his/her title may be immediately changed to Assistant Research Scientist. The expectation is that this should occur within one year of the initial appointment. Under no circumstances can it be longer than two years. PI on Grants? Yes TEACHING ALLOWED? Assistant Research Scientist CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -Potential for scholarly development, possibly as part of a larger research program. Record of peer-reviewed publications. Participation in relevant academic PI on Grants? Yes TEACHING ALLOWED? No - requires separate appointment APPOINTMENT PERIOD: Three years; renewal with successful internal review. Term-limited can be less than three years. College EC REVIEW? No Posted? Yes, request for waiver to Tom Palmer Vacation/time card/sick time: Yes, must be accounted for on time card by unit so that it is taken before grant period ends Medical Benefits? Associate Research Scientist CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -Strong local reputation on the basis of research productivity and contributions over several years, but without the necessity of conducting an independent research program PI on Grants? Yes TEACHING ALLOWED? No - requires separate appointment APPOINTMENT PERIOD: Open, unless term-limited appointment (should be at least three years). College EC REVIEW? Yes Posted? Research Scientist CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -As for Associate Research Scientist, but with expanded reputation based on continued essential contributions to a research program PI on Grants? Yes TEACHING ALLOWED? No - requires separate appointment APPOINTMENT PERIOD: Open, unless term-limited appointment (should be at least three years). College EC REVIEW? Yes Posted? Adjunct Research Scientist (any level) CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -Must have other equal rank appointment at UM or outside non- academic position at proposed rank. PI on Grants? With permission of chair and divisional AD TEACHING ALLOWED? No APPOINTMENT PERIOD: Annual – renewable College EC REVIEW? No Posted? No Vacation/time card/sick time: No Medical Benefits? No because appt is expected to be dry and should never exceed 25%. 11

Visiting Research Scientists (any level) CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -Appropriate for someone who will be conducting research here from a peer institution for some period of time - not necessarily limited to a single year but this title should not be considered continuing. Rank level is recommended by department EC. PI on Grants? With permission of chair and divisional AD TEACHING ALLOWED? No APPOINTMENT PERIOD: Annual renewable College EC REVIEW? No Posted? No Vacation/time card/sick time: No Medical Benefits? If over 50% or greater and appointed four months or more. 12

Research Associate Professor CHARACTERISTIC LEVEL OF ACTIVITY -Strong location and national reputation on the basis of research productivity and contributions over several years consistent with that of a tenured associate professor. Substantial record of peer-reviewed publications. Significant, sustained participation in relevant academic or professional meetings. Independent scholarship and funding. A record of substantial non-didactic teaching and mentoring of postdoctoral fellows, junior research colleagues, or students at any level within the context of one or more research fields (e.g., laboratory bench science, social science, or other disciplinary setting). Service expected but not at the level expected for a tenured associate professor. PI on Grants? Yes TEACHING ALLOWED? Non-didactic teaching and mentoring of postdoctoral fellows, junior research colleagues, or students at any level within the context of one or more research fields (e.g., laboratory bench science, social science, or other disciplinary setting).
