Chapter 20 Developing a Design Plan

Objectives 1. Identify the steps in developing a design plan. 2. Explain how to assess client characteristics. 3. Complete a scale drawing of a room and its furnishings. 4. Develop a preliminary design budget. 5. Identify the components of a design resource file.

Steps in the Design Process 1. Identify the project. 2. Asses client characteristics. 3. Analyze the environment. 4. Develop a preliminary budget. 5. Compile a design resource file. 6. Plan use of space. 7. Choose a style and color scheme. 8. Select backgrounds, furniture, lighting and accessories. 9. Present the design. 10. Implement the design.

Step 1: Identify the Project Budget Time Frame Critical Thinking – How does the amount of time a client intends to live in the home influence decisions about the specific design project?

Step 2: Assess Client Characteristics Use one or more inventories, or surveys that identify characteristics that will affect the design plan. Activities Entertaining Preferences Hobbies Studying Work Future Considerations Universal Design

Step 3: Analyze the Environment The Environment Inventory: –Number and placement of rooms –Storage areas –Furniture and accessories –Activity Zones Private Social Service

Step 3: Analyze the Environment –Energy Considerations –Electrical and Lighting –Safety –Traffic Flow –Conditions of backgrounds Flooring Walls Window treatments

Step 3: Analyze the Environment Establish Priorities – prioritize their wants and needs in order of preference.

Step 4: Develop a Preliminary Budget Includes: –Wall coverings (paint or wallpaper) –Floor coverings (carpet, rugs or wood) –Window treatments (curtains, blinds or shades) –Fabric (curtains or bedding) –Furniture (bed, chairs, desk, dresser, etc.) –Lighting (lamps & light fixtures) –Accessories –Labor

Step 4: Develop a Preliminary Budget Contingency Fee – additional percentage of the total cost of the project. (20% is often used)

Step 5: Compile a Design Resource File Sources: –Decorating magazines –Furniture and accessory catalogs –Informative websites –Sunday newspapers –Interior design reference books –Categorize by furnishings, window treatments, floor coverings and so on….

The Project Design a bedroom for a 8-12 year old boy or girl. Create a display board to show your client your plan. Think about the steps in the design process to complete this design. Look for guidelines for a display board on the next slide.
