Hour 3 Definition of Poetry Poetry can be an art, where whatever the poet thinks is right is right, and whatever the poet wants it to be about it can be about. It’s heartfelt, musical, and uses your imagination.

Hour 4’s Definition of Poetry Poetry can be whatever you want it to be, in any style, and can help people get through things.

TEN-MINUTE GRAMMAR Subjects and Predicates

DAY ONE – SUBJECTS & PREDICATES Identify the SUBJECT of the following sentences (who or what the sentence is about): A sneaky rat named Scratch was pilfering food from the pantry. 1. Suddenly, the rat heard a low growl and a hiss. 2. Scratch bolted as fast as he could. 3. Captain Meow, the black Tomcat, raced at Scratch’s heels. 4. Just in time, the brown rat scurried into his hole.

DAY ONE – SUBJECTS & PREDICATES Identify the PREDICATE in each of the following sentences (what the subject did): Captain Meow waited patiently. 5. He sat outside the mouse hole all day long. 6. Finally, the old tomcat decided to take a nap. 7. Snoring loudly, the sleepy hunter forgot about his prey.

DAY FOUR – SUBJECTS & PREDICATES Read the following excerpt and answer the following questions: (a) Inside, he latched the flimsy door and sat on the bed. (b) The room was cold and smelled of unwashed clothes, but it was quiet. (c) Slowly, he let himself lie back. (d) He breathed in and inhaled terror.

DAY FOUR – SUBJECTS & PREDICATES 1. What is the predicate of sentence (a)? (hint – it’s a compound predicate so the subject is doing two things, which are both part of the predicate). 2. What are the subjects of sentence (b)? (hint – the sentences has two subjects because it’s a compound sentence – two independent clauses). 3. Would the word “Slowly” in sentence © be part of the subject or the predicate? 4. In sentence (d), is “breathed in” part of the subject or predicate?
