A verb can be considered as one of the most important parts of a sentence. You probably already know that a sentence must be composed of a subject and a predicate, so what makes a verb so important? Well, the verb is the main component of a predicate. Without it, there won’t be a sentence, just a bunch of words with an incomplete thought. Simply defined, the verb is a part of speech which is used to demonstrate an action or a state of being. What is a Verb? Khuku is reading now.

Note: বাক্যের subject যদি third person ও singular number হয় তাহলে present indefinite tense এ verb এর সাথে s/es হয় । কিন্তু অন্য কোন Tense এ রকম হয় না । লক্ষ্য কর : উপরের বাক্য গুলোতে Jeba, Jeams subject গুলো third person singular number( একবচন ). Jeba eats rice. Jeams sings a song. What are they doing ?

Note: Subject third person হয়েও যদি plural number( বহুবচন ) হয় তাহলে verb এর সাথে s/es যুক্ত হয় না । এখানে subject গুলো হল plural ( বহুবচন ). They eat rice. They sing a song. What are they doing ?

Note: Present indefinite Tense এর বাক্যের subject third person ও singular number হলেও বাক্যটি যদি negative হয় তাহলে তাতে does not ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং তখন verb এর সাথে s/es হয় না । He does not go to school. (negative) He goes to school. (affirmative) What are they doing ?

Note: Past or future Tense হলে verb এর সাথে s/es যুক্ত হয় না । সেক্ষেত্রে সেই Tense এর structure অনুযায়ী verb বসবে । 4. Modal verb যেমন : can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, dare, need, ought to, have to, must এর পরে verb এর সাথে কোন কিছু যোগ না হয়ে verb এর present form বসবে । We should drink clean water. Rana will buy these vegetables. What are they doing ?

Note: yesterday,ago,last week, last month/year, day before yesterday( গত পরশু দিন ) ইত্যাদি word বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয়ে যদি কাজটি ঐ সময় হয়েছিল বুঝায় তাহলে verb এর past form ব্যবহত হয় । বাংলা বাক্যটিতে verb এর রুপ present এর মত মনে হলেও ইংরেজীতে verb এর past form ব্যবহার করতে হয় । Jamal bought a cow yesterday. Note: অনেকক্ষণ ধরে একটি কাজ চলছে এরূপ বুঝাতে for এবং অনেক আগের কোন একটি মুহূর্ত থেকে একটি কাজ চলছে এই অর্থে since ব্যবহৃত হলে তার পূর্ববর্তী verb এর present perfect continuous tense হয় । যদি verb না থেকে কোন Adjective থাকে তাহলে তার পূর্বে have been / has been(present perfect tense) বসে । It has been raining since morning.They have been eating for two hours. What do you see in the pictures ?

Note: Lest দ্বারা দুটি clause যুক্ত হলে পরবর্তী clause এর verb এর আগে should বসে। ঐ verb টির negative রুপ ব্যবহার করা যায় না। Run fast lest( পাছে, নইলে ) you should miss the bus. Incorrect: Work hard lest you will fail. Correct : Work hard lest you should fail. What are they doing ?

Note : As if, as though দ্বারা দুইটি clause যুক্ত হলে প্রথম clause টির verb present tense এর হলেও পরবর্তী clause টির verb এর past indefinite tense হয় । He talks as if he were(was নয় ) mad. He behaves as if he owned the house. What are the wrong with these sentences ?

1. No sooner had +sub+verb (past participle)+ than + Past indefinite tense. 2. Scarcely had + sub + verb (past participle) + When + Past indefinite tense. 3. Hardly had + sub + verb (past participle) + When + Past indefinite tense. No sooner had he reached the station than the train left(past form). What do you see in these pictures ?

Note: Bear infinitive (let, make, see, behold, watch, hear, bid, need, dare, fee,, cannot but, used to ) would rather, had better, have to, has to, am to, is to are to ইত্যাদি পরের verb টি present form হয়। We let him say in peace. Where is bare infinitive used ?

Note: Before মানে হল " আগে " । এর আগে verb এর past perfect tense(had + verb এর past participle) বসে । আবার after মানে হল " পরে " । এরপরে past perfect tense (had + verb এর past participle) বসে । ডাক্তার আসার আগে রোগীটি মারা গেল : The patient had died before the doctor came ডাক্তার আসার পরে রোগীটি মারা গেল : The patient died after the doctor had come ডাক্তার আসার আগে রোগীটি মারা গেল : The patient had died before the doctor came ডাক্তার আসার পরে রোগীটি মারা গেল : The patient died after the doctor had come Where are before and after used ?

Note : Cannot help, cannot but, cannot bear, be +used to, worth, with + gerund, by+ gerund, with a view to, look for ward to, feel like, would you mind, prefer to, addicted to, devoted to ইত্যাদির পরে verb এর সঙ্গে “ ing ” যোগ হয়। The mother cannot but laugh.
