Clauses Independent ClauseDependent Clause Contains a subject and a predicate Can be a sentence by itself Can be missing a subject, or a predicate Can contain a coordinating conjunction (i.e. although, since, etc.) Cannot be a sentence by itself
Simple Sentence Contains one independent clause Examples: ◦The old man walked slowly down the street. ◦Jeff and Rick played catch after school. ◦The horse jumped and kicked Scott.
Compound Sentence Contains 2 or more independent clauses Examples: ◦The snow was falling and the wind was howling. ◦The friends had to get the door open soon or they would freeze to death. ◦The boys’ basketball team is undefeated, and the girls’ team seems to be on a winning streak.
Complex Sentence Contains an independent and a dependent clause Examples ◦I will go to the store after I make a shopping list. ◦Once the work was done, the four teenagers went out for pizza.
