Redesign of a Distal Protection Filter Sandeep Devabhakthuni Chenara Johnson Daphne Kontos Perry Tiberio Mentor: Dr. Ender Finol 3/1/05

Background Atherosclerosis: Narrowing and hardening of carotid arterial walls due to plaque build-up Could lead to stroke Considered 3 rd leading cause of death Carotid Artery Stenting Problem: Possible embolization in the brain resulting in a stoke. Solution: Embolic Protection Devices

Project Goals Research distal protection filters currently on market to determine which features provide the best efficiency Incorporate these best features into our redesign while adding new ones Manufacture the prototype Test prototype using flow loop system that simulates the carotid artery Determine the efficiency of the redesign in capturing particles similar in size to embolic debris.

Milestones/Timeline Build prototype using Solidworks (Perry and Sandeep) – End of February Order Materials (Daphne) – End of February Manufacture prototype (All) – Middle of March Test prototype in flow loop (All) – End of March Perform statistical analysis on data (All) – Early April

My Personal Focus Research effects of filter pore size and consequences of reducing pore size – Done Perry and I are building computerized prototype using Solidworks – Almost Done Use COSMOSFloWorks to perform some preliminary testing to determine success of prototype – Currently Performing As a group, we will build prototype using materials we ordered – Incomplete As a group, we will run several tests on the prototype using the flow loop system at Carnegie Mellon – Incomplete

SolidWorks Tentative Design

Possible Problems Manufacturing Specifications of our design Material Attachment of struts Testing Actual prototype functioning the way we proposed
