An Orientation to the Common Core State Standards

I’ve Gotta Be Me!!

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel JUST LIKE ME!! Please stand up if… You’ve been in education for less than 5 years 6-10 years years years over 30 years

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel JUST LIKE ME!! You are a teacher or administrator in the same district where you attended school yourself You’ve ever tweeted You’ve ever Skyped or Tangoed or used any face to face video chat.

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Are Our Students College and Career Ready?

Essential Questions What is the REASONING behind College and Career Readiness? What are the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and how they will impact our instruction and assessment? How are we getting READY for implementation of the Common Core Standards (CCSS)? How will the work of the CCSS be ROLLED OUT? Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel

REASONING What is the reasoning behind College and Career Readiness?

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Did you know... 42% of new 4-year college students and 49% of students at 2-year institutions take remedial courses due to inadequate high school preparation

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Did you know… 46% of recent high school graduates with no further education are inadequately prepared for the work habits they will need on the job. Rising to the Challenge: Are High School Graduates Prepared for College and Work?

What does it mean to be College and Career Ready? College Readiness: College today means much more than just pursuing a four year degree at a university. Being “college ready” means being prepared for any postsecondary education or training experience, including study at two- and four-year institutions leading to postsecondary credential (i.e. a certificate, license, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree). Being ready for college means that a high school graduate has the English and mathematics knowledge and skills necessary to qualify for and succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing college courses without the need for remedial coursework.

What does it mean to be College and Career Ready? Career Readiness: In today’s economy, a “career” is not just a job. A career provides a family-sustaining wage and pathways to advancement and requires postsecondary training or education. A job may be obtained with only a high school diploma, but offers no guarantee of advancement or mobility. Being ready for a career means that a high school graduate has the English and mathematics knowledge and skills needed to qualify for and succeed in post secondary job training and/or education necessary for their chosen career (i.e. technical/vocational program, community college, apprenticeship or significant on-the-job training). WHAT IS COLLEGE- AND CAREER-READY? Achieve

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Are College and Career Ready the Same Thing? Thirty-five years ago, only 12% of the U.S. jobs required some postsecondary training or an Associate’s degree and only 16% required a Bachelor’s degree or higher.

Are College and Career Ready the Same Thing? Nearly eight in ten future job openings in the next decade in the U.S. will require postsecondary education or training 45% percent will be in “middle level” occupations, which require at least some postsecondary education training -This is what our CTE course of studies are preparing students for -These are the high need, high wage careers 33% will be in high skilled occupations for which a Bachelor’s degree or more is required

Are College and Career Ready the Same Thing? Only 22% of future job openings will be “low skill” and accessible to those with a high school diploma or less While the U.S. still ranks 3 rd in the adult population (25-64 year olds) with an Associate’s degree or higher among 30 countries, we now rank 10 th among year olds with a two-year degree and above. Competing countries are catching up to – and even outpacing – the U.S. in the educational attainment of their new generation of adults. WHAT IS COLLEGE- AND CAREER-READY? Achieve

Momentum Behind the Common Core State Standards Currently, every state has its own set of academic standards, meaning students are learning different content at different rates CCSS are internationally benchmarked so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society This initiative will potentially affect 43.5 million students which is about 87% of the student population Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel

Development of Common Core State Standards Joint initiative of: The National Governors Association and The Council of Chief State School Officers Supported by: Achieve ACT College Board Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel

Criteria Used to Develop CCSS Fewer, clearer, higher Aligned with college and work expectations and standards Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher order skills Based on international benchmarks Realistic and practical for the classrooms Consistent across all participating states Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel

Connections Across Content Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Math K-8 Benchmarks 9 – 12 Conceptual Categories 6 – 12 Literacy Science History/Social Studies Technical Subjects ELA K – 5 Cross Curriculum 6 – 12 English Language Arts 6 – 12 Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel READINESS How are we getting ready for implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)?

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Focus on the Big Picture Principles for Learning: A Foundation for Transforming K-12 Education Being literate is at heart of learning in every subject area. Learning is a social act. Learning about learning establishes a habit of inquiry important in life-long learning. Assessing progress is part of learning. Learning includes turning information into knowledge using multiple media. Learning occurs in a global context. (ACTE, CoSN, NCSS, NCTE, NCTM, NSTA)

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Why are Common Core State Standards good for students? College and Career Focus. It will help prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college and careers Consistent. Expectations will be consistent for all kids and not dependent on a student’s zip code Mobility. It will help students with transitions between states Student Ownership. Clearer standards will help students understand what is expected of them and allow for more self- directed learning by students.

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Why are Common Core State Standards good for educators? Depth. Guides the development of curricula that promotes deep understanding for academic concepts and process for all students Own the “How”. Empowering Effective Teacher data indicate that HCPS teachers’ highest percentage of “Developing” ratings fell in Domain 3 which is focused on instruction. The Common Core State Standards are centered on Student engagement Implementation of higher order questioning and discussion techniques Use of assessment to align instruction Ensuring the success of all students, using an extensive repertoire of instructional strategies Training. Allows for more focused professional development

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel ROLLOUT How will the work of the CCSS be rolled out?

Helping students achieve by helping teachers excel Starting with the End in Mind New tests/assessments tied to the CCSS will be conducted during the school year New assessments will be computer-based and given at specified times during the school year More focused on application of knowledge Florida is a governing state in the PARCC consortium which is one of 2 consortiums developing the national assessments Piloting of CCSS items will begin in 2012 and 2013
