The Battle of Fredericksburg. December 13 th, 1862 “We might as well have tried to take Hell” -N.Y. Infantryman
Following the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln fired General McClelland and replaced him with General Burnside.
Burnside immediately moved his army to attack Lee at Fredericksbu rg, Virginia.
Burnside’s attack in the South failed.
Burnside is forced to attack the strongly held Confederate center.

The Battle of Chancellorsville. May 2 - 6, 1863
The New Commander of the North’s forces was Joe Hooker. He immediately moved his army to hit Fredericksburg from the rear.
Lee split his army, leaving 10,000 in Fredericksburg and send 40,000 to stop Hooker at Chancellorsville.
May 2 nd, 1863
Lee decided to divide his army again and send Jackson with 28,000 men and the Union army from the rear.
Jackson surprises the north’s forces.
Stonewall Jackson is accidentally shot by his own men in the left arm.
Hooker orders a retreat from Hazel Grove.
Casualties North17,000 South 13,000 (Including Stonewall Jackson who died on May 10 th )
