Recycling Rate >90% Go Smarter to Work Gold Award. 9 Best Environmental Initiative- Winner Smartfusion- Consolidated Deliveries Project Managed and coordinated by NewRail. Evaluates the technical and logistical feasibility of introducing fully electric vehicles and the second generation of hybrid truck technology in the urban logistics environment. Newcastle based demonstration project centralises deliveries to an off campus location and implements last mile services using electric trucks- reducing vehicle congestion and CO 2 emissions on campus. 11 Outstanding Research Project- Winner NUFEB Multidisciplinary project covering ecology, modelling, biology and engineering. Partnership with Northumbrian Water and Mott MacDonald. Research tests the idea that open engineered biological systems, such as water purification plants, operate on a series of universal principles that can be captured, coded and used in design. Research findings then applied to create more sustainable technologies to improve the environment, energy, materials and health. 13 Outstanding Estate Project- Winner Direct Works- Lighting Replacement Projects Ongoing schemes to improve efficiency of fittings Replacement of inefficient internal and external fittings with LEDs has achieved savings of 50,000kWh and 23,000kg CO 2 e per annum
