4 Ranked ‘First Class’ in the People and Planet University league; highest in the Russell Group and the region, 12 th overall. Scoring highly in Environmental Policy, Waste and Recycling, Carbon Reduction and Sustainable Food.

5 Operational Environmental Sustainability The ESS Sustainability Team and a network of Environmental Co-ordinators work to reduce the environmental impacts of the University. Other achievements include: 3 rd consecutive year of dual accreditation- ISO14001 and EcoCampus Platinum. Shortlisted for Green Gown awards in Carbon Reduction and Social Responsibility categories. Recycling Rate >90% Go Smarter to Work Gold Award. Proportion of staff travelling to work by car reduced from 40% in 2004 to 16.5% in ,000kWh generated from PV arrays at Devonshire Building, Armstrong Building and Biomedical Research Building. 13 University owned electric vehicles Secured EV taxi contract with Phoenix Taxis Undertaken 4 th year of Green Impact

11 Outstanding Research Project- Winner NUFEB Multidisciplinary project covering ecology, modelling, biology and engineering. Partnership with Northumbrian Water and Mott MacDonald. Research tests the idea that open engineered biological systems, such as water purification plants, operate on a series of universal principles that can be captured, coded and used in design. Research findings then applied to create more sustainable technologies to improve the environment, energy, materials and health.
