What is a Marine Biologist? They help protect life forms in a specific environment. The study of marine organisms, their behaviors, and their interactions with the environment. Discover new compounds to make medications by studying marine bacteria. Tag and track animals to learn more about their behavior.

What I assume…? Average pay Works with the ocean and sea creatures Collects many samples Works with many people Different fields to work in Must have a degree in Marine Biology Lots of volunteering Constantly around the ocean

What I Found Out? Learn perspectives of how habitats influence marine life. Study behaviors and their interactions with their environment. Research jobs involving marine mammals are hard to come by: popularity, working with marine animals is also highly regulated. Fun but also hard working conditions. Scuba dive a lot to collect samples. Travel to different places to research different habitats and species.

What I Learned? Works normal 40 hour week. Has a different job everyday for what you deal with (for ex, scuba dive one day and another you are in the lab testing your samples) Must have a bachelors degree in Marine Biology and Marine Science. Must learn to work in cushy environments. Marine Biology is studied by trawling, plankton nets, remotely operated vehicles, underwater habitats, fiber optics, and satellites. Salary :Salary$29,429 - $100,671

Job Shadow I job shadowed Mariah Evin and Thomas Reynolds who work at the San Francisco Bay Aquarium. We fed animals, cleaned cages, logged sharks feeding, Feeding the animals we chopped up many fish to fed to the sharks, stingrays, eels, octopuses, injured fish. Cleaning the cages we had to take a substance that tends to build up in Pipe Fish cages. Watched the sharks feeding. They were fed Catfish. None of the sharks ate that day. Logged everything that happened that day such as the feeding, cleaning and anything new that happened.

Advantages Get to go out and scuba dive whenever. Works with the ocean daily. The advantages are doing what you love best whether it is looking after animals or researching. You also travel around the world to exciting places to save endangered animals or species and have adventures in researching. You can have interaction with a variety of animals you have never seen or touched.

Disadvantages Some disadvantages would be if the research is long and uneventful or you can't find what you are looking for. You have to take care of a dead animal or treat sick animals that are dying. Swimming with animals you absolutely are scared of like sharks or jellyfish.

How To Get Into This Career? Have a least Bachelors degree in Marine Biology or Marine Science. Volunteer has much as possible at aquariums to show your dedication to the animals. Explore the coast when your walking along the beach examine the seaweed or the marine creatures.

Would I Consider This Job? Yes, because you are constantly working by the ocean. Travel many different places and discover new animals. Meet many people and try new exciting things daily.

10 Year Plan Graduate from Vista Del Lago Go to college at Hawaii State University and attend Coconut Island Graduate college with Bachelors degree Start looking for volunteer places for Marine Biology Start looking for the real deal with Marine Biology Start traveling the world for an adventure with this career Maybe move to a different country and experience new things with Marine Biology Keep traveling and living my dreams before anything.

Fun Facts!!!! When a dolphin is sick or injured, its cries of distress summon immediate aid from other dolphins, who try to support it to the surface so that it can breathe. Great White Sharks can go as long as 3-6 months without eating. Lobsters can live up to 50 years. Oysters can change from one gender to another and back again depending on which is best for mating. Sea sponges have no head, mouth, eyes, feelers, bones, heart, lungs or brain - yet they are alive.
